    Camera reliability?

As you discovered, power grid problems may take out the PoE switch, but will not affect the camera itself. These cameras are failing for internal reasons, not external ones. I'm still researching for appropriate replacements; for the time being I'm using the old Foscam cameras.

    Camera reliability?

You're welcome to start another thread on how to troubleshoot and fix cameras. As I said previously, this is not what this thread is about.

    Camera reliability?

It's irrelevant info; you cannot prevent it, fix it, or repair it; since there is no warranty on these cameras, you just need to buy a new one.

    Camera reliability?

I know what's wrong, I've seen these kind of failures countless times, they're the most common in high tech electronics. I did not start this thread to ask for troubleshooting assistance, I wanted to find out whether other people have seen the same failure rate that I saw. BTW, I did open the...

    Camera reliability?

So you're saying that the Firmware gradually became more and more corrupt over a period of a few months, until it was so corrupt that it stopped responding? Right.

    Camera reliability?

I stated it very clearly on the very first page, Post # 12. I can't follow your logic here; you're saying that a power surge reset the camera to the default IP address, then 40 seconds later another surge re-set it to the original IP address -- and that cycle kept occurring for months? And...

    Camera reliability?

So your hypothesis is that the ethernet connector got corroded through moisture ingress and... then what? What is the exact failure mechanism? Reminder here, the cameras are still powered up and they are recording data, you just cannot communicate with them anymore despite all interventions: new...

    Camera reliability?

Of course I'm not comparing apples to apples; what I'm saying is that the odds were massively stacked against the Foscams: they were indoor cameras installed outside with the SD slot and power connector fully exposed to the elements. You may not think very highly of the ethernet seal housing...

    Camera reliability?

The Foscams are Wi-Fi. So you are saying that during the period 2011-2019, the power/environmental conditions at my place were somehow favourable and the Foscams that were directly plugged into outlets survived, yet during the 2019-2023 period with the Dahuas powered by PoE (hence once removed...

    Camera reliability?

Just as a reference point: the first security cameras I installed back in 2011 were some cheap Foscam ones; they were indoor-only cameras, but I went ahead and installed them under the eaves in the exact same positions where the Dahua are now. Over the course of 8 years, the optics of 3 out of...

    Camera reliability?

There are too many configuration settings to start listing all of them; is there a specific one that you believe adversely affects reliability?

    Camera reliability?

Lightning strikes may be a problem in South Dakota, but they are a non-issue in the SF Bay Area. You also missed the point where I said that the failures are not catastrophic but gradual, occurring over a period of a few months.

    Camera reliability?

So you've done the root cause analysis and determined that it is indeed the design and not, e.g. a malfunctioning sensor, or a flaky sub-component, or... a dozen other things?

    Camera reliability?

That's right, we do pay: they offer their products at 65% of the retail price and give us 3x the warranty. Maybe Apple just likes us? The way I know the reliability of our products at 3x the warranty period. Because we have run reliability tests, because we get daily reliability data from the...

    Camera reliability?

What do you think it's based on? The good will of the company? You think there is a single CEO out there who's going to risk the financial well being of his company because he feels magnanimous towards his customers?

    Camera reliability?

Why don't you ask him to clarify? Maybe he can get the reliability data from Dahua and post them here.

    Camera reliability?

They offer 1-year warranty to direct consumers. Their Warranty structure is completely different for OEM and other large customers; Apple is both a customer and vendor of ours, and their products come with much longer warranties.

    Camera reliability?

That's how we were too up until... maybe 15 years ago? The competition became too fierce, we were leaving too much money on the table with our reject rate, so we had to implement a waterfall process to bin our products; we simply couldn't afford to be selling prime products with full warranty to...

    Camera reliability?

Before you commit to being a full-time Dahua apologist, maybe re-read my original post where I said that even Andy stated that the useful life of these cameras is 5-6 years. Ah, too late, you are fully committed.

Every company that offers warranty on their products, absolutely. Otherwise, how would they know how much warranty to offer?

    Camera reliability?

You have a very simplistic view of electronic devices; it is not a black or white call, and it hasn't been for at least 60 years. A complex device like one of these cameras we are talking about will go through a hundred tests (a few of them BTW being about surge protection) during its...
  24. J

    Camera reliability?

You're not talking about a power surge then, you're talking about a lightning strike; a power surge does not behave the way you describe it, plus all electronic circuits have built-in measures (either fuses, or specially designed traces) to prevent power surges from destroying the electronics...

    Camera reliability?

You're missing the point, the POE switch is not a pass-through device, it actively powers the camera, so there is no physical way for the switch to pass the surge to the devices downstream. Besides, why would a $50 POE switch have more robust components than a $200 camera?
  26. J

    Camera reliability?

I don't see how a computer or NVR UPS would prevent the cameras themselves from dying. Maybe a UPS on the cameras would help, but the cameras are not plugged directly into outlets, they're powered by POE switches, so if a power surge is strong enough to kill a camera, then it would kill the POE...

    Camera reliability?

The failure mechanism has been the same for both cameras: they slowly go offline for longer and longer periods; initially they are offline 10% of the time, and as the weeks go by the offline periods get longer, until they are 100% offline. Even then though, the power supply is still working, and...

    Camera reliability?

I know, that's why I posted the question to the community. Although the 20% failure rate that I'm seeing is consistent with what Andy considers as the lifetime of these cameras, I found it hard to believe that the quality is so low for a product that seems well constructed.
  29. J

    Camera reliability?

All of my cameras are under eaves, so there is no direct exposure to sun or rain; one of the failing cameras is actually installed in the garage, so even more favorable conditions. But I would argue that the environment should not be a factor: if a device is to be used in harsh conditions, it...

    Camera reliability?

During the past five years I purchased 11 cameras to cover the perimeter of my house, but in the last three months two of the cameras (a HDBW4231F-E2-M and a HDBW4231E-ASE ) have died. I contacted Andy who said that these cameras have a useful life of 5-6 years, which makes the demise of my two...
