It doesn't take long ..

I was hiking out on the lake a few winters ago and came upon fresh kill. A decent sized deer, missing only an eyeball and something else I can't recall off the top of my head now. It was too exposed otherwise I would have deployed the game cam I always carry with me on hikes, just for things like this. But my feeling was if a guy on a sled cam around, my cam would disappear so I took some photos, observed any prints nearby and left for the night. I returned about 18 hrs later, and it was gone .. and I mean gone. NO sled tracks, or human tracks .. a few wolves, and eagles were all that came around. I looked high (in the cliffs), and low along the shore, and nearby banks etc but could find no trace. It would have made more sense if I'd seen cougar tracks, but there were no cat tracks that I saw.

If I'd only left my game cam overnight .. $%^&*
