Looking at PoE-compatible NVRs. 16-channel specs will say 8 channels ready for PoE cams. Okay--what are the other 8 channels for? I'm looking to do the following, hoping someone can offer a few tips or point me to some good reference pages where I can learn more on this...

Ideal Setup (all hardwired; max distance 200 feet):

NVR with external storage capability (assuming 16-port)
8-cam capacity minimum (start with 2 and add over time)
a few motion detectors
several reed switches
audible and flashing-light alert AND alert sent to cell phone if:
motion detected
reed switch circuit broken / wire cut / cam wire cut
Best-case, when alerted I'm told WHICH input was tripped.

Maybe an NVR's a bit sophisticated to be handling reed switches and that's kept separate. At this point, I don't know what I don't know. I gather that Dahua and Hikvision are quality brands(?), and that most of the brands commonly marketed to home- and small-biz users is junk. So, who makes the good stuff?

Any help appreciated!

16 channel specs with 8 internal PoE ports on the device. Means you can plug 8 cameras directly into the NVR and the other 8 can be attached via an external switch with that switch being accessible via the same network as the NVR. The NVR can run a total of 16 cameras.

The standard NVR recommendation has been the Dahua 5200 series, typically the 5216 (5000 series, 2 HDs, 16 channels) which recently went EOL
Pro Series
Pro Series

It appears they are moving to the "EI" series with a bit more AI intelligence where the NVR can do some AI that used to be by camera only, and handling increased incoming bandwidth
WizSense Series

These all have some number of external alarm inputs/outputs

Thanks! External alarm outputs--does this mean they can be used to trigger audible/visible alarms in other rooms if, for example, Input A changes state? Also--seems like it's against the law or something to list Dahua prices online; does anyone actually do that, anywhere? :)
