I have 4 Dahua(N82AL32) and 1 Hikvison (4mp) cameras and will be adding 2 interior cameras. 1. What is the best 8ch NVR w/o HD or 2. Should I repurpose my Dell 9020 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20GHz. Cameras will be connected to separate PoE switch and not direct to NVR (if preferred).

That is like asking if you go with Honda or Toyota LOL.

There is a big Blue Iris or NVR debate here LOL. Some people love Blue Iris and think NVRs are clunky and hard to use and others think Blue Iris is clunky and hard to use. I have done both and prefer Blue Iris. As with everything YMMV...

Blue Iris has a demo, so download it and see what you think. It will run fine on a 4th gen.

I found with DVR/NVRs that I had over an 8-10 year span before I moved to BI that I was more reactive with an NVR, meaning I only looked at the footage LONG AFTER something happened like a neighbor asking if my cams caught anything. The false triggers and pulling up the slow interface and what not just got too time consuming so I could go months without looking at it. Most people I know turn off notifications from their NVR because they are just too many.

With BI - I only get notifications for actual events - not shadows, leaves, rain, etc. I am notified BEFORE someone comes to my door. In addition to knowing IF someone came close to my house in the middle of the night, in literally less than 30 seconds I can scrub the entire nighttime videos for anything unusual. It could take longer than that just to key in the search parameters on the NVR....and then wait and wait and wait...

I have found the customization to set up motion triggering events to be much more granular with BI than an NVR.

Granted much of my experience was before AI came into the NVRs, but even before that, I had my motion detection down in BI to not give me false triggers. Could never get anywhere close to that with the NVR.

People here run 50 cameras on a 4th gen below 40% CPU...Another runs 18 cams on a 3rd generation below 20% CPU.

As long as you follow all the optimizations in the wiki, it can be a very capable system.

I'm running a 9020 i5-4590 as my daily driver for everything. And I put an instance of BI on here to look at my Amcrest( Dahua OEM) AMDV8M8-H5 Pentabrid DVR.
So I'm streaming 8 cam's to the PC plus an Amcrest Video doorbell ( AD110) and it's fine. But my SSD is getting old.
Not a problem to experiment with both.
I do however have a dedicated drive for the streams. 8TB WD Purp

I do both because we started out with a Nightowl DVR, switched to an Amcrest for the better, iphone App, and other family members need something stable while I play " Mr. Wizard" with Bi configs.

Because you have 3rd party camera, so If prefer NVR then use the NONE POE one, NVR5208-4KS2.
