Best IR IP/PoE camera?

Thanks for the link. Very informative! I'm guessing I could go with the 5442 for 4 MP. Is there any hikvision alternative for this camera? Asking this since Hikvision can be purchased more easily where I live and I also want to possibly compare both cameras.

Is there any good IR camera that is 8 MP? Fixed lens.

I'm looking to possibly identify/recognize people during night if that makes sense. 40 feet or less.

Dahua currently has more model options available that are on the ideal MP/sensor ratio and/or better chips.

Reach out to @EMPIRETECANDY as he sells all over the world and may be able to cost-effectively sell you what many feel are better cameras.

Outside of PTZ cameras, 8MP worth anything (on ideal MP/sensor ratios) only come in fixed lens and many do not see infrared, so you are limited to IDENTIFY at the 15-17 feet range.

Further, these 8MP cameras demonstrate that these cameras are not infinity focus, so anything shorter or longer than the 15-17 foot range will be soft blurry.

Many feel 4MP represents the best overall performance and value in these cameras.

A 4MP camera with a 32mm focal length will beat the socks all night long of an 8MP 3.6mm fixed lens at 40 feet. Won't even be close.

In case of HIK situation / availability of good cameras with bigger sensitive sensor is much more complicated.

there is ColorVu line, which have 4/6/8 Mpx big 1/1.8" sensors, but only with White lights...
There is variant named ColorVu with hybrid lights (2CD2xxxG2H models) which have big sensors and both IR and white lights..

But this line is Full Color line - so open F1.0 aperture lens which is not so sharp.
Also cheap plastic chassis, lack of varifocal variants (so only fixed lens like 2.8/3.6mm)..

If You want something better HIK have many cams in Ultra (2CD3xxx) and DeepinMind (2CD7xxx) lines which have big sensor and much better optics...
But they cost much more and availability is much smaller.

If we talk about 8MP and IR. Dahua have 5842 (58IR) line, which is mirror of 5442 (54IR).
The only difference is 2x more pixels and much lower (around 3x) light sensitivity (2 times more pixels in sensor the same size = smaller pixels = smaller light sensitivity)..
Everything else is the same.

8Mpx increase Identify range about 50% vs 4Mpx..

the best solution for longer identify is simply use varifocal models - with optic zoom.
You lose wide angle but gain face/human/car/plate details...

Normal ZE optics for 54IR/58IR gives You 1x-3x zoom range (110 to 45 degree horizontal view).
There is Z4E variant optics for 54IR/58IR which gives You 3x-9x zoom range (45 to 15 degree horizontal view)..

Here example 5442-Z4E catching human / faces / cars / plates from public street (camera is mounted on house from same distance to plot)..
night cars / plates pictures don on strong IR from camera...

Low light cameras the 4mp and 4K both have, but 4mp will be the best for very low light place.

Motorized lens 4mp

Fixed lens 4MP

4K motorized lens

Hi Bil

For Hikvision Cameras, I recommend DS-2CD2743G2 4mp dome ip camera , 2.8-12mm Motorized Varifocal lens IR 40m.

For 8MP with fixed lens, i recommend DS-2CD3183G2 , 8MP, 2.8mm, 6mm, 8mm lens optional.

By the way , is it true you often visit Epstein's island? :)

You're recommending a dome camera ^^^^ ? :wtf:

Poor recommendation. Those dome cams will do very poor after dark they are on the wrong sensor size. Along with the problems that domes outdoors cause.

He recommended dome camera with 8Mpx and 1/2.8" sensor from Hikvision :)
Everything is wrong :)

As soon as I saw the dome I didn't even look at the poor sensor because I personally wouldn't have recommended a dome even if it had a huge 1/1.2" sensor. :headbang:

Thanks for the information!

What software is that? And I guess the sensor size applies both to IR and color night vision?
