My setup:
Windows 7 64 bit, intel i7 4740 @ 3.4GHz
CodeProject 2.0.8 /YOLOv5 6.2 /custom models / ip-combined
No GPU graphics card

I've just started using CPAI with BI5 and I've read that object detection in BI should be turned off. I don't get this, because when I turn this off, triggers/alerts start going off all the time when there is nothing even there, and in turn making my CPU peak. When object detection is on, BI sends images to CPAI only when criteria from object detection is met, which in turn lessons the load on my CPU, compared to when its turned off. Isn't this the better way? I've also tried YOLOv5.NET but can't get this to work -keeps turning off.
Any suggestions?

You want to disabled the default model via objects:0 and use custom models. The custom models are faster and better tuned for most use cases.

If you are talking about Camera Settings/Trigger/Motion Settings/Configure/Object Detection, I would check that checkbox. I had actually unchecked that option, and was puzzled because I was constantly getting alerts for stationary objects. Thanks for reminding me about this, I re-enabled that on all cameras, and now Blue Iris is acting the way I expect it to.
Of course, if you are talking about the Settings/AI/Default Object Detection checkbox, you should only check that checkbox, OR Use Custom Models, not both.
For many years, my opinion has been that this program has waaaay too many settings. :) :)
There are too many options to break things.

Enabling default object detection can streamline processes by automatically identifying and classifying objects in real-time, which is beneficial for scenarios requiring quick decision-making or real-time monitoring, such as surveillance, retail analytics, or automated quality control. On the other hand, disabling default object detection may be preferable in situations where customization or manual analysis is needed, or where the data set does not involve image-based inputs.

Bot much?
