Bit Rate Issues

Hi,

I'm having some Bit Rate Issues. I'm on an older BI build atm until I can get some PC backup software as everytime I update and AI gets upset, I end up having to do a total clean Windows Installation to fix it!

So the issue I'm having is what I've always seen - my 4k camera's mainstream has been reported in BI as being full hd and locked at 4000kbs. Since installing my replacement camera this has fallen to 2000kbs. My sub stream suffers the same. Set to full hd and 4000kbs, reported at 1080P but at 1,000kbs.

BI has always locked me to full hd. In the Video tab anything higher 1080P is unavailable. FPS set to 15fps with 66 kbs the top 15fps preset it offers me.

I thought this was misreporting, but since dropping to 2000kbs, I can see issues with the picture quality during the day - it's lost some sharpness and there's some blur / pixellation of movement ie people leading me to believe the bit rates may in fact be correct. Exposure is set to 6ms, gain 0-20 (as shady spot under a car port), NR etc on. So no obvious setting reason.

When I check the LAN properties BI > Switch, they're reported as Megabit connection making me suspect it's not the cable as communication link appears fine. Cable has been tested for connection integrity using a tester (but not speed other than LAN properties).

Any suggestions? I'm struggling to think where to go here. Are there limitation in BI on receiving 4k? If so, why has it changed without an update?

Ate you using H265 and VBR?

Make sure you use H264H and CBR.

4,000 is low for 4K. Most here will run 4K at 12,000 or so.

Make sure in BI that is is pulling mainstream 0 and not a substream.

I'm running 16,400. The stream is reported in BI as being 2,000.

It's the difference between Kilobytes and Kilobit.
The camera shows the bit rate as (Kb/S
Blue Iris shows it as kB/s.
The difference between "Kb" and "KB" lies in the units of measurement they represent in the context of digital information:

  1. Kb (Kilobit):
    • Definition: A kilobit is a unit of digital information equal to 1,000 bits.
    • Usage: It is often used to measure data transfer rates (e.g., internet speed), where you might see speeds expressed in kilobits per second (Kbps).
  2. KB (Kilobyte):
    • Definition: A kilobyte is a unit of digital information equal to 1,024 bytes (in binary systems) or sometimes 1,000 bytes (in decimal systems, particularly in networking contexts).
    • Usage: It is commonly used to measure file sizes and storage capacity.
Summary

  • Kb = 1,000 bits
  • KB = 1,024 bytes (or sometimes 1,000 bytes)
Understanding this distinction is important for interpreting data rates and file sizes correctly.

So 2 issues here potentially with BI then:

1. It should be KB not kB

2. It would make sense to use the same bit rate measurement as the cameras.

Thanks for you help. I'll speak to Ken.

One other issue I don't undertsand though is why resolution is locked to 1080P in BI. Could this be a restriction from before 4K cameras were available or is this the sub stream. It would seem strange to report the sub stream as the main setting.
