I have been trying to get set up with a remote tech support session from the Store- but can never seem to get a confirmation or option to even put my credit card info in my reservation.

I would love to find someone willing to remote in to my system and help me with some of my basic settings, and to also go through and do some fine tuning for performance and optimization.

I've been using BI for 5 or so years and really like it. I seem to stumble my way into configuring it properly for LAN and WAN access, but occasionally run into difficulties - as in now! I have a wifi usb adapter in my server, and things are working fine. However- I'm trying to get my cameras all over to POE, and also thing the server will be better off with a direct ethernet connection to my router. When I plug the ethernet cable in however, I get some weird behavior. One of my cameras takes the identity and function of a different camera. My remote access is spotty, etc. When I put the wifi adapter back in, things seem ok- but some of the cameras are slower to connect...

I know this will be pretty basic for someone good with networking and router edits (Linksys MR8300) but quite frustrating for me.

Would be appreciative if anyone can point me to someone I can hire for remote help- I do have a membership with the GeekSquad, but not sure I'd get what I am looking for with the fine tuning of camera and BI settings.

Thanks in advance

Do not port forward BI , there are about a billion vpn options out there and then you don't have the risk of exposing your systems to the raw internet.

Thank you. I do have a subscription to a good VPN, so that is good advice. Now- just to set it up right!

A subscription VPN is not what is needed. Those are used to HIDE your IP address for illegal streaming and porn addictions LOL and will not put you onto YOUR network.

You need a free VPN that you host like OpenVPN that is native to many routers that puts you back on YOUR network when away from home.

Or some use Wireguard, TailScale, or ZeroTier.

Got it. I'm hoping to hear back from Mike or someone at the Store to buy some time to have someone help me configure everything correctly and optimize things. i know about enough to be dangerous.
My system is functioning fine - locally and remotely- but isn't set up right. As I mentioned- when I plug in an ethernet to my router, things go awry. It must be picking up a new IP or something of the sort. I'll get it figured out somehow, hopefully with some assistance!
Thanks

It sounds like you might be using DHCP for your cameras instead of manually assigning them a static IP address.

Quote "My system is functioning fine - locally and remotely" So if the BI system is not plugged into your router, how is it currently working for remote access if it has no connection to the internet? Perhaps you could explain a bit more how it is currently connected, do you have 2 nics in the BI PC or is it connected using a wireless connection to your router, some details would really help us help you!

It’s connected by a WiFi usb adapter
Sorry I missed that detail in you original post, how are the cameras connected to the BI PC, do you have more than 1 NIC in your PC or are all the cameras wireless also? you mentioned that you wanted to get the cameras working with POE, are some of them wireless connected or connected to Ethernet with a separate power feed to the camera. Is the wifi adapter set to a static IP or does it use DHCP.

There is a setting in BI that you probably want to check for each camera, open the camera settings, go to the video tab, click the configure button and check if the box for "Skip initial MAC, HTTP, DNS reachability test " is checked if so then uncheck it for all your cameras, this setting can cause issues when the network setting for the BI server change as would be the case when you switch network connections to the server!

Most of my cameras are wifi-I’ve just purchased 3 POEs. The POEs are connected to a powered switch which is connected to a wireless node on my Linksys mesh network. Not ideal- but I plan to bury an Ethernet cable from the router in the house to that location
Honestly- don’t know if the wireless switch is set to static or DHCP-I’m assuming static because I haven’t had issues with it working for some time
Is that a setting I elect in my router setup or on my pc?

The wireless adapter DHCP setting would be a setting on the BI PC/Server, you would have to go into the properties for the adapter to see how it is set, to be honest running all of this over wireless is not particularly good as you may suspect! Just because the system has been stable is not an indicator of if it is using DHCP or static! The cameras that switch around are they wireless and set to static or is it one of the new POE cameras?

ll check that later today when I am home, thanks!

In answer to the question of camera settings, they are each individually set to static. I checked my "Skip initial MAC, HTTP, DNS..." and all cameras were unchecked for that.

I actually have two separate BI servers, each with it's own subscription. The server with the wifi usb adapter is in another location so I couldn't yet check the device to see if it is set for static or dhcp. The other system has ethernet already working and running fine. I could not find a setting in Windows 11 to check whether it is static or dhcp. I'm guessing I need to get into my router to check that out- which I will try to do

The setting for static or DHCP is in the properties for the ethernet adapter, not on the router, the router may have a setting for a reservation in DHCP which will keep the IP address the same all the time, but does no guarantee a fixed IP if the PC is connected to a different router or network that has another DHCP server!

I checked the ethernet adapter settings, and don't see anything related to static or dhcp at all, under any of the tabs. Looking under Network Adapters, Intel Ethernet Connection. There are 7 tabs- none of which have those settings, so gathering I'm in the wrong place- but see nowhere else in settings where this would be
