My HOA camera system uses smart pss software. The record control schedule shows both regular and motion detect activated at the same time for some of the cameras. Does regular mean the camera is recording 100% of the time? If so what is the need for motion detect? I am looking for ways to increase retention time to more than the current 12 days before overwrite. I am considering reducing frame rate from 30 to 15 but want to keep the resolution at D1. Also considering new HD with more than 1 TB. Any recommendations/

Your "HOA" camera system? You mean you are required to have a camera system meeting certain specs? Hopefully they won't have a problem with you changing the recording settings.

Anyway it is hard to say with an old analog system whether you will gain storage time by cutting the frame rate or not. No harm in cutting it to 15 FPS though. A bigger hard drive may work but it may also not be compatible with your older system.

If I were you I would scrap the whole system and install 2MP or 4MP IP cams with an NVR and a huge disk.

The board just appointed me the camera committee after supplying them with numerous videos of damage to the entrance gates. I started working one but left on vacation and the files were overwritten when I returned. So we just need to increase retention time. They are ok with the frame rate change but want more info on the rest. I just made the change so we will know in a few days if it helps.

Bit rate is the important number, if you have the option to change it. Otherwise you just have to hope that reducing the frame rate will indirectly reduce the bit rate.

It does sound like you are probably recording continuously, and changing it to motion only would dramatically improve things.

Thanks for the info. I read about the bitrate but couldn't be sure it affected recording time or just the remote viewing capability. When I reduced the frame rate to 15 I also changed the bitrate from 2048 to 1024 even though I didn't know what it would affect. I think I will go back and delete the regular record also and rely only on motion. Thanks again for the info.
