Confused as heck about Hikvision event detection

Still trying to sort out event / motion detection on an Annke branded Hikvision camera. Asking here because I believe the configuration is about the same.

What I want:
To detect only humans and vehicles in my driveway. On my old Dahua cam it was easy to set and worked remarkably well. Now using Annke FCD600 cameras (ID51X equivalent) with Synology Surveillance Station.

What my choices are:
There are at least 5 settings for human/vehicle in both the Basic and Smart Event settings. My experience is as follows:

Basic Event
When I select human and vehicle with Motion Detection enabled, it seems to flag all motion. Changes in lighting, clouds, insects, all report motion - and it ends up being continuous. I don't believe human/vehicle options do anything for Basic Event motion detection, so far as I can tell.

Smart Event - Intrusion, Line Crossing, Region Entrance, Region Exit
Selecting human/vehicle with these options seems to work better (the nuisance reports no longer happen), but the detection is not reliable. I've set areas, minimum size, and maximum size, but I can't get a reliable detection in the area. Some times I can walk around the cars in the driveway without triggering detection, and at night, in particular, a car can pull in without triggering.

The assistance that would help:
Can someone help me understand:
  • Why so many options?
  • Why does human/vehicle selection seem to do nothing on the Basic Events configuration?
  • Which of the configurations should I use to get the result I'm seeking?

Thanks!

I'm not too versed in Hikvision stuff right now but I would try changing the sensitivity. If you hit the Help button in the top right it should show what each thing does in in the settings

I bumped the sensitivity from 60 to 80 as an experiment, using intrusion only.

The documentation behind the help button is somewhat generic to all/many cameras. It doesn't even mention vehicle/human selections on the Basic Event config as far as I could tell. Perhaps they weren't even meant to be there.

But the documentation was helpful at describing sensitivity:

Sensitivity: Range [1-100]. Sensitivity stands for the percentage of the body part of an acceptable target that enters the pre-defined region.
Sensitivity = 100 - S1/ST*100

S1 stands for the target body part that enters the pre-defined region. ST stands for the complete target body.

Example: if you set the value as 60, the action can be counted as an intrusion only when 40 percent body part enters the region.

The "% of body part" mechanism is interesting and not what I would have thought initially. I'm thinking it's possible that when set at 60, it's looking to see 40% of a vehicle or 40% of a human in the region set. If someone walks in and their body is partially masked by something in the driveway, or a vehicle only pulls 20% of the way in to the frame, that perhaps it's not seeing it. So setting to 80 should result in only needing 20% of either to trigger motion.

I'll see how it works. It had been picking up insects and snow in front of the camera as motion previously, and I'm hoping it doesn't increase their detection, but I've now set a minimum size too, which should be larger than either.
