Connecting Hik NVR directly to MacBook

Noob question:
Anyone have success connecting LAN out of Hik NVR (7716NI) to a MacBookPro using crossover ethernet? Thought all it would require was turning off wifi, connect x-over cable, manually set IP in Macbook network/ethernet settings, then enter NVR IP in browser. But no luck.
Just want a way to bench top without lugging around a monitor etc. in certain situations.
 
just use a normal patch lead, if the NVR is 192.168.1.1 set the mac to 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0 no gateway or DNS require.... well it works for me :-)

check in the terminial with ifconfig and ping 192.168.1.1
