Hardware controllers like this are completely unnecessary unless you are going to be regularly controlling your PTZ cameras. Then using a joystick is certainly going to be easier. For example, if you are using PTZ cameras in a broadcast/streaming situation or controlling them from a manned security room, then controllers like this are great. If you are a home owner that just wants to move/control their PTZ camera occasionally, then using a software controller is going to work just fine IMHO.

The joystick/keyboard is an awesome addition if you've got the need.
I got this NKB1000 at my computer desk, with the HDMI feed from the NVR to a monitor beside me.

How did you get the keyboard going? I have one, but cannot for whatever reason get it to work.

I was using NVR5864, and didn't get it to work on there. I now have NVR616H and I cannot get it to work for me. The documentation isn't very helpful, at all.

The instructions got mine working fine....
Add device to the NKB1000, type NVR, enter IP address, enter username & password of the NVR and that's it.
The password & username has a limit of 16 characters.

Supposing the one I am using is defective?

Are you using the latest firmware per: DahuaWiki

I created a user on the DVR specifically for ptz control, but it always tells me the login failed.

Well, to answer my own question, the firmware upgrade fixed that issue. The keyboard is working, but the way it interplays with the NVR over the network is rather unusual. May be exclusive to my NVR616H.

I don't have my cameras appearing in order. In fact, my PTZ cameras on the live view grid of the NVR are cameras 1 and 3, but spot 1 is PTZ20 and spot 3 is PTZ19. Whenever I select on the keyboard PTZ 20 (punch 2, 0 then PTZ button), it selects the camera that is 20th on the live view grid which is a doorbell camera in that spot. But, so long as I select the camera on the keyboard and then adjust the view on the NVR with a mouse, its all good.

Said in a different way, selecting PTZ 20 on the keyboard makes the live screen view on the NVR maximized on the 20th tile view. Camera PTZ20 is actually grid spot #1 in view. When I select 20 PTZ, it switches the live screen full view to the camera appearing 20th on the live list, but gives control to the actual 20th programmed camera.

So I give live view of grid 20 with control of actual camera 20.

However, when directly connecting to the IP camera itself, there is no such issue.

So, a firmware upgrade to General_NKB1000_Eng_V2.620.0000000.1.R.20200221.bin fixed whatever issues there were. Even tried a direct serial connection into the DVR from this keyboard and it wouldn't work there either. It's working just fine on the network now.
