Yes the I2-Models have a different chip(set) and there are differences in features. For example:

I2-Models
1-channel perimeter protection (AI by NVR)
SMD 3.0
Audio: PCM; G711A; G711U; G726
...

I-Models
2-channel perimeter detection (AI by NVR)
SMD 1.x
Audio: PCM; G711A; G711U; G26; AAC
...

For me my "old" Dahua NVR2108-I is the better model because my older Dahua cameras don't have any AI-Features. But the new I2-Models have other advantages (for example SMD 3.0) and will probably get longer firmware updates.

Yes you can/must use the firmware DH_NVR2XXX-I_Mul_V4.002.0000000.1.R.220211 for the HS-I but there are no Release-Note so nobody knows what was changed. The older firmware is still running an works for me.
