A friend is asking for recommendation on a camera system. Blue Iris is out of the question. I've installed 3 Hikvision NVR in the last 5 years for friends and family and they're both going strong today. But if I'm not mistaken, Hikvision DDNS is no longer available?

I started to convert my Hik cameras to Dahua as they fail, for some reason like the current dahua models better so I'm thinking about recommending a Dahua NVR and 4-5 cameras. It'll be tucked in his media cabinet connected to his TV and will probably be forgotten until needed. The ability to remotely monitor and get decent alerts with minimal false alert would be ideal.

Was wondering how are the Dahua NVR vs Hikvision? Features are pretty similar?

I don't have any experience with Dahua NVR's but have owned 2 Hik NVR's, including my current IPCT 16 channel. Look into our 8 channel IPCT-NVR3208-8P-I2. Hik DDNS is no more, but there are other DDNS options built in as well as their p2p platform. I'm also releasing a free DDNS service called IPCT DDNS. @looney2ns did a review on our NVR Review-IPCT-NVR3208-8P-I2 Network 8ch POE NVR

For the "minimal false alerts" part, since most NVRs don't have enough processing power to do their own motion detecting (and rely on the cameras to figure out when motion is happening and then to alert the NVR), you're going to want to use the advanced motion detection features on the cameras... Hikvision calls their advanced motion detection "Smart Events", and Dahua calls theirs "IVS".

ONVIF usually allows folks to mix brands and have the basics work <i.e. your Hikvision NVR should be able to record/do basic motion detection from your Dahua cameras just fine>, but ONVIF doesn't support Smart Events/IVS. So if you were to configure/enable IVS on your Dahua cameras, when an IVS alert happens, it shouldn't be able to trigger a recording on your Hik NVR.

In order to use Smart Events/IVS <which IMO is one of the big extras these professional-grade cameras offer over consumer-grade models>, you almost always have to match the brand of the NVR with the brand of the camera. Blue Iris (and some other VMS) can also use Smart Events/IVS, too. I know that's not in scope for this project.

I have two Hikvision NVR's with 50% Dahua cameras plugged in and no problem at all with ONVIF.
Are you saying that your Dahau cameras' IVS feature can trigger a recording on your Hikvision NVR? That'd be pretty big news. That feature hadn't been part of the usual ONVIF that NVRs support.

I have a Dahua Starlight recording on an IPCT NVR so I'll check this out and confirm. That would be amazing news, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
