Maybe it was a free sample, like at Costco...
Brace yourselves, goin' down a rabbit hole here....
Growing up in the 50's and 60's I used to enjoy going to the "big" grocery store in town at a Saturday with my mom, especially one of the chain stores on the Eastern seaboard, I think it was A & P or Kroger .There'd be a lady with a table spread out with samples of a certain goody and each week or each day it was usually different.
There'd be a jam, jelly or preserve on a cracker, or peanut butter, or a tiny cup of apple, orange or grape juice and a little cube of ham, cheese or fried sausage speared with a toothpick. My favorite was one of the little cocktail weenies, "Little Smokies" , IIRC.
I'd have one, go around the aisle, eat it it, take off my cap or jacket, anything to make myself look different and go back for a second. I was positive I had her fooled and that no kid had EVER done that.....
