DVR - Camera compatibility

I have a DVR that is on its way out and will need to replace it. All cameras at the site are analog and I would like to upgrade to HD cameras down the line, but do not have time to do so right now. With that in mind, I would like to install a DVR that can handle current cameras and upgrades over time to either HD over coax/bnc like is already routed in the building or IP cameras. My basic question is this - how do I know that the cameras I currently have will work with a new DVR of a different brand? I know some DVRs will only work with their branded cameras, even if it is the same type of connector. Most DVRs seem to only work with their own specific app as well for remote viewing.

A general answer would be great, but if it isn't that easy, the DVR I am looking at using is the one linked below. I currently have a Eyemax DVST PST960H-16. I would love to get this DVR from somewhere other than this website, but can't seem to find it with the exact same specs. I want 32 channels in order to add more than the 16 we currently have, 1080, and all three input types.

To add a little more information that might be helpful to getting an answer...

The model of Dahua that I linked above is a HCVR5232AN-S3 and the manual is linked below along with the Eyemax manual.

Looking at the specs on video input, the Eyemax says it has BNC connections with Available source of "Composite/960H/Mixed." The Dahua says its inputs are "BNC port (HDCVI HD video/general standard definition video self-adaptive)." Obviously they will physically go together as they are both BNC, but am I to read that these are otherwise compatible with the same cameras?
