Hello,
Can someone with a bit more experience, please explain how this works?
That a 16 channel NVR, is specd to able to decode 32 channels@1080.
At what point, would 32 channels need to be decoded , on a 16 (max) channel unit?
Thank you

16 Channels 1U 16PoE 2HDDs Network Video Recorder

  • Smart H.265+/H.265/Smart H.264+/H.264/MJPEG decoding format.
  • Max. decoding capability: 32 × 1080p@30 fps or 16 × 4MP@30 fps.
  • Max. 384 Mbps incoming/recording/outgoing bandwidth.
  • Support AcuPick with Max. 16-Channel.
  • Support N+M cluster.
  • AI by recorder: 2-channel face detection and recognition, 4-channel perimeter protection, and 8-channel SMD Plus.
  • AI by camera: Face detection and recognition, perimeter protection, SMD Plus, metadata, ANPR, and people counting.
  • Security baseline 2.3.

I suspect that's a copy/paste error in the feature list at the top of the product page. In the specs section is says this:

Capture.JPG

A few days ago when looking at specs for something else on a different web site, I noticed that the feature list was correct and the specs were wrong. Sometimes you have to double check these things. Overall, I've found that out of most all the Dahua vendors, Andy consistently has the most correct specs. Vendors on other places like ebay and ali express routinely paste an entire list of specs for a camera different from what is being looked at.

Thank you, I saw that as well.. yet on more than one occasion, I have come across a "max decoding" capability , that I find confusing.
For Example, I've seen...... 32 channel NVR with an 8 channel @1080 decoding capacity ???? What good is that?

So this got me thinking about what exactly "max decoding" means. is it The max amount of channels that can be recorded at once? max amount of Channels that can be streamed remotely at once? or perhaps, the max amount of channels that can be viewed live at the HDMI output at once?

At this point, I realized, I just don't understand, the whole"max decoding" spec. LOL
If anyone else wants to chime in.
Thanks again

'Decoding' is the output resolution through HDMI/VGA. This does not affect recording resolution of the camera(s).

8ch @ 1080P means each of the 8 cameras can be live viewed or played back at 1080p through the NVR's HDMI.
Which means sense..... you cannot decode a higher combined resolution if the HDMI's maximum is 4k.

In the case of >32ch NVRs, the maximum decoding is more than 4k since there is (usually) two or more HDMI outputs... but your NVR is 16ch so likely an error specifying 32ch. It should be 16.

This is the specification regarding maximum recording capabilities.
Each camera uses some bandwidth. E.g. a 4MP camera in H.265 ~8-12Mbs.
The maximum for all cameras is under 384mbs.
This 384mbs also includes outgoing bandwidth, such as 3rd party systems viewing the cameras or DSS, Smart PSS, DMSS viewing/playing back video.

Decoding capability is how many Megapixels per second can NVR decode to display it on HDMI or analyze using built-in AI engines..
Decoding capability has nothing to do with incoming bandwith - which tells how much bandwidth (in mbit/s) the NVR can receive from the cameras and write to the disk.

5xxx-EI can decode 64 Mpx at 30fps...
But this metric doesn't tell users anything so in specs sheet You have something easy to compare:

Decoding capability: 32 channels 1080p (2Mpx) or 16 channels at 4Mpx or 8 channels at 4K / 8Mpx... everything at 30fps..

If You multiplay how many channels and how many Mpix - there will be always 64 Mpx at 30fps for this line...

Yes 8 or 16 channel NVR can't decode 32 channels - but this is only for comparison...

it's old and cheap NVR..

last one...
if You have 16 cameras at 8Mpx (4K) at 30fps - NVR can display only 8 at once using main (full resolution) stream..
If You will try to display 16 at once over HDMI ports, minimum half of streams will be displayed from secondary low resolution stream (360p or 480p).

If You want to display at 16 at full resolution - You must decrease FPS by half (15 FPS) on all cams to fit into max decoding capability.
