For @wittaj As requested.

From the SD1A404XB 4MP (2.7mm to 12mm focal length) temporarily mounted 7m above street level:

At about 18m @ 12mm focal length (4x zoom)

From a Dahua N85ENF2 4K (2.8mm fixed focal length) mounted 6m above street level:

From 13m. Subject on electric bicycle.

I'm surprised more at the N85EFN2 and it's 2.8mm focal length. It's able to capture decent face pics on subjects moving at about 20km/h. I get about 300 face captures a day from the N85EFN2.

The SD1A404XB also does well. Even though chain link fences.

I have the settings to the lowest quality threshold and quick snap. Set up like this, the cameras done do face attributes but can do them at higher quality settings. I just want the faces. I can sort out the rest.

Impressive to me but I'm new to this. The N85EFN2 goes to IVS at after dusk. I'm anxious to see what the SD1A404XB can do in B/W when I get it properly setup with some IR illuminators.

Thanks for sharing. Shows the value of varifocal at distance when the camera is higher up.

Time for you to get a 5442-Z4E or a more powerful PTZ to really capture some good shots from that height!

The PTZ will be mounted about 2m lower and 2m closer to the street than it's current position. This is the temporary location:

Planning on buying the Dahua mini-PTZ with 25x zoom when it's released. I really like the form factor of the SD1A404XB as it's not obvious that it's a PTZ at first glance. Looks more like a fixed dome camera.

Also going to replace the existing 2.8mm fixed with a varifocal with face detection at my front entrance. It's a perfect location for face detection as the walkway is only a few feet wide. Forces the subjects into a designated area where their faces can then be captured.

@CanCuba If you are still testing different locations, perhaps mount PTZ on this structure if that is part of your property. Much closer to street so you can get more of the face details.

I've considered it. But I'm too worried about the camera being damaged or stolen. It's not out of the question to mount it on a mast in the same location. Technically not my property (the building is 3 floors and each floor is a different property) but I know the owner would give his approval. His place was broken into at the beginning of the pandemic.

@CanCuba You can always run a test line to that location temporarily, maybe for a few days, to see if the images you get is worth it. It might change your mind.

It's true that someone can damage your camera but these cameras are relatively inexpensive and can be replaced. Plus, if you mount it 8 ft or higher, that helps keep it out of people's reach.

Really, I have two concerns:

1) I'm a foreigner with several (12, soon to be 13) cameras mounted. In the face captures, a lot of people are giving my cameras the stink eye. They have the perception, and it's not incorrect, that I'm surveiling them. Unfortunately, crime is on the rise due to the economy crashing because of the pandemic.

I may install said pole and then mount a solar street light on top. Just leave it like that for a few months and then quietly mount a PTZ on the same pole. Not really looking to be the paranoid yuma/gringo. Even though I am.

Some kind of anti-climbing measure could be used to prevent someone from climbing said pole.

2) This particular PTZ doesn't do 360 degrees. It does 355. There's 5 degrees that can't be covered. And mounting on top of that column by the sidewalk, I'd have a hard time deciding which 5 degrees of coverage that I'd be willing to lose.

3) The cameras are relatively inexpensive. But living in Cuba, I need things "muled" down to me. I order stuff to a friend's house in Canada or the US if I know that they're coming down. Not quite Amazon Prime timelines. It's a bit of hassle and I'm essentially asking people for favours when they come down.

@CanCuba I appreciate the sharing. No doubt, life in Cuba is probably more eventful than where I live. Stay safe.
Cuba has, until very recently, known to be safe. Unfortunately, the economy cratered due to the pandemic as the country lived off of tourism.

Also, I forgot to mention that this PTZ I have isn't very fast. 80 degrees/second pan and 40 deg/sec tilt. If it's too close to the action, it won't be able to keep up. I think having it a bit farther away will better match it's capabilities.

Dropped the maximum shutter speed on the mini-PTZ down to 1.5ms this morning. Just checked the FD results. Getting some captures, however poor quality, at 20+ meters!

The subjects are semi-identifiable. Later today, I'll post some captures I did myself of license plates. Not the best angle but getting stills decent enough to make out the plates. All due to the faster shutter speed.

Using Google Maps, I'm getting a distance of 21m on this one.

And a whopping 25m here. Yes, it's the back of someone's head but the camera did have a face associated while they were walking.
