I've been running an Ubuntu headless file server for a while now with a dual core Pentium G620 @ 2.6 GHz with 8GB of Ram. I'd like to make use of this box for my camera system but seem to be running into processing limitations.

I'm looking to have roughly 6 x 1080p cameras, with remote viewing, motion detection, recording etc...as well as some custom features such as turning off recording while I'm home (when my phone is connected to my wifi). As far as I can tell this would require a custom script, so an easy way to control these cameras via command line is a must.

I've tried both ZoneMinder and Xeoma, both of which seem to accomplish most of what I want, but the system load with only 4 cameras gets quite high. In my testing I was just viewing 4x1080p streams simultaneously, without motion detection or recording. I can sacrifice viewing resolution and framerate a bit, but want to record high quality to review later if needed.

Should I be looking for a newer, more powerful machine dedicated to cameras? Or would a dedicated NVR box work? I have enough disk space in my current server, so if I end up with an NVR, could it record to my current server rather than an internal HDD?

I've noticed some of the cameras I'm testing (Hikvision and Dahua) seem to have some capability do do the motion detection and recording to network drive, all by themselves. Is this a viable option? Is there still some way I could control them with my own script to turn off the recording when I'm home?

Any tips appreciated!
