Getting started

Hello good people,

I've done a lot of research on consumer products and over time discovered that all the IP cam know-how on the internet is right here on these forums. I have searched high and low for an EASY (point n click, plug n play, download an app and go) solution, and given up. I want 5 things from an IP camera system:

1) PoE only. No WiFi. I'm trying to eliminate all WiFi from my house.
2) Remote viewing capability
3) Local direct network access and NVR capability
4) Good quality cameras
5) Unbroken bank

I have come to the conclusion that this combination only exists in a DIY system, so here I am.

I'm semi-competent to program switches, routers, VLANs, VPNs, firewalls, and run Cat5 so I think I'm ahead of the curve for a IPcam beginner. In general, I am planning to run Dahua cameras with a PoE switch and a Blue Iris PC with a hefty recording HDD.

Does that sound like I can hit my 5 targets?

Welcome to IPCAMTALK.

Sounds like a good starting plan that does hit your wants.

I suggest that you start with one good varifocal cam and set up a test rig that you can use to design your cam placement plan. The T54IR-ZE-S3 is a good cam for this. It can be purchased from our resident Dahua distributor, Andy, aka @EMPIRETECANDY from the link below, his Amazon store, or directly from him via email. Right now he is offering a black Friday sale.

Make sure you checkout the WIKI for basic info.

Thank you very much for good advice. I read the same thing in a thread about how to choose lens length, and I had this process in mind. I'll take the hardware recommendation and the sale, thanks.
