Hi all,

First of all, I am very new to IP cams and NVR.

I have 12 3MP ONVIF POE IP Cameras (Brand: ANSPO) connected to a 24 port POE+ Gigabit switch, all wired with UTP Cat 6. Concerning the NVR (brand: CANTONK), it is a 16 channel. Not using the motion sensor.

There is frequent lag on the NVR but however when I connect to the specific camera via their IP on the browser, it is fluid. Main stream is set to 720p with 15fps and substream is VGA with 12fps. All set to Fixed Quality.

Do you think that it will be wiser to use a PC (config: core i7, 16GB memory, 2 x 2TB hard disk) for live viewing and recording, and use the same NVR for mobile viewing only?

Anyone has the experience regarding the PC as NVR for CPU/Power usage?

Thank you very much for your support.

my understanding is the real benefit of an embedded DVR software/hardware solution is using them in conjunction with the same branded cameras so that you can utilize the proprietary motion sensing control, thereby reducing the workload on the DVR so that you don't run have to run as much processing power 24/7. The other is that they are more compact and only have the minimum of output/inputs needed vs a full blown PC. It looks like you are running 3MP cameras in 1.3MP 720p mode which seems like a waste, and then the cameras don't appear to be utilizing motion sensing so i assume they record 24/7 continuous then? I would guess without the motion sensing, the DVR is having a hard time supporting that many cameras.

Hopefully someone can chime in here who could spec out a desktop based system with that many cameras at full 3mp resolution because at 36MP total, that will require some decent processing power as well as a decent bus/array of drives to handle the writing.
