I have a 4 camera nvr system. It is a couple years old. One of the cameras stopped working recently.
The camera is in the soffit and protected from rain. Nothing has changed with respect to the wiring.
I took the camera down from the soffit, pulled the ethernet cord out and put it back in and it started working again. Putting it back up it stopped.
I swapped the ethernet cable for camera 3 and 4 to see if the problem might be the NVR port. Same camera different port still not working.
I took the camera down to the NVR and hooked it up directly using a short cat6 cable, the camera was fine for over a day.
This leads me to believe it is a problem with the cable and not the camera.
The ethernet cable was coming out from one small hole and then the dome camera cable was going up into another hole with the ethernet wire being bent into this hole. I figured maybe the bend in the cable and it being compressed under the camera over time caused an issue. I enlarged the big hole to incorporate the small hole and allow the cable to be recessed into the hole without it being compressed by the camera. I added some connection enhancer spray to the cat6 cable end and to the rj45 port on the camera. The camera stopped working in less than a day.
I took my rj45 crimpers and gave the connectors another compress and the camera worked for 6+ hours.
My next thought is to shorten the cat6 cable at the camera location (hopefully eliminate the portion of the cat6 cable that was bent) and add a new connector. I'll take a look at the nvr end of the cable but are poe cat6 cables terminated with the same standard as cat6? If I put a new connector on the shortened cable and it still flakes out what else can I try?
I was wondering if all the wires/pairs in the cat6 cable are used by the dome camera maybe a wire of the cat6 cable was damage at build time and it finally packed it in? Is there some kind of ethernet cable tester that could help me narrow it down?
