How to configure Dahua NVR with two cameras best? AcuPick? AI by Recorder? AI by Camera?

Hi there,

I have been using two cams of type "Lupus LE232", which are actually branded Dahua cameras. Since they are not updated by Lupus I got the recommendation to use a Dahua NVR to benefit from a more recent and more intelligent detection of humans.

I therefore bought a Dahua DHI-NVR5208-8P-EI and connected the cameras to it. When now chosing "Event | AI Settings | IVS" I can see all the features I configured directly in the cameras before, now being able to configure both cameras at the same time in the NVR.

But actually the behaviour/detection of the cameras did not change at all. To me it seems the cameras are still interacting on their own and not that the NVR is doing anything more intelligent.

I saw that in the "IVS"-view there is not a "Type" field as in several other screenshots. In that "Type"-field one should be able to chose between "AI by Camera" and "AI by Recorder".

After changing "AI Settings | Smart Plan | Recorder | Mode" from "AcuPick" to "AI Mode" and rebooting the NVR, the "Type"-field is now displayed.

When chosing "AI by Recorder" I guess the NVR is handling the camera stream and doing the intelligence, am I right?

But when leaving "IVS"-view, chosing e.g. "SMD" and then "IVS" again, channel 1 is showing "AI by camera" again, although I selected "AI by Recorder" and applied the settings before.

Can somebody explain what is the best way to configure those cameras with that NVR? Are both camera and NVR IVS working in parallel? Or do I have to disable the camera AI at some point?

Thanks for clarifying and helping a newbie out ;)

Best regards,

In my setup I do IVS on the camera and facial recognition and facial detection on the recorder. Seems to do the job. Don’t forget to create a facial database and a passerby database!

If camera supports AI function you want to use (like IVS), then You should use that AI function done of camera...
they always work better run on camera and not NVR..

AI functionality done on NVR is used only in situation where camera is dumb (or don't support AI which we need) or simply if we want another AI function done on NVR (like AcuPick or Face Detection/Recognition) to AI function done on camera (like IVS)..

The firmware of my camera is not updated anymore, it is now 1,5 years old. Because the NVR is updated regulary I thought it was a good idea to use the NVR AI, because it is newer and probably more intelligent than the AI of the camera or am I wrong?

Is it recommendable that when using "AI by Recorder" in NVR I better disable the IVS directly in the camera? Or should I leave it enabled to be sure that the camera is still recording/working even when the NVR is offline?

Yeah, I know. Currently I receive mail on an event, which is quite unhandy. But I am sure to receive an event, even if the NVR is offline.

But if I understand you correctly, you recommend to use the camera AI.

Well then there is actually no need for a NVR in my situation I guess. I have the cameras for approx. 2 years now and was disappointed that there is no new firmware developed. So I bought that NVR and hoped for a more recent and intelligent system. But it seems I should better not have done that?

Why NVR should be offline? it device designed to work 24/7...

100% systems I do are AI cams + AI NVR, where cams do first level of AI filtering but storage and event distribution to mobiles is always on NVR side.
Both must work to have full functionality.
never have been any problem.

Always I use UPS for NVR and POE switch.

if you want to test AI performance on NVR, do that.. simply disable the same AI function on camera.

You ask many questions about camera which we don't know.
This is some strange German Dahua OEM, which looks like cheap Dual Light 2xxx series from a few years ago but I'm not 100% sure..

If you have any questions about it, you should ask them to who sold it or installed You..

Thanks for all the information.

I will try to reconfigure as you described it (AI on both, storage+mail on NVR only).

I know that Lupus-cams are rare. Sadly the company I bought the cams from (incl. installation and configuration) is not really trying to help me out.

Why am I unhappy? I bought the cams for one reason: Some years ago was a firestarter in our neighborhood which led to burning cars right in front of houses. I am really scared of that idiot enlightening our car, so I asked for help. The company I asked recommended and installed that Lupus/Dahua cams. The biggest advantage is that they start playing a sound "Attention, video surveillance" if they recognize a person in the configured area. So the plan is to drive a possible firestarter away.

But it actually does not work as expected. It does work most of the times, although the cameras play the sound very late, when a person already has reached the car. And sometimes the camera does not recognize a person at all.

Because that it the one reason I bought the cams for, to be 100% sure that a person approximating our car (at certain times, namely at night) hears that loud sound and is hopefully running away before doing anything stupid. And that is not working exactly as expected. The company I bought the cams (and installation and configuration) from recommended adding that NVR for a newer AI implementation.

And that's where I am right now. Because I lost trust in that company I am trying do improve it myself.

And this is the post / question You should start this thread with...

Show as footage when someone approaches the car and camera don't detect them or is very delayed. Recorded at night (where is problem).

The best will be footage with detection AI rectangles enabled - so You must screen record on mobile/desktop when You watch footage from some Dahua / Lupus app (desktop or mobile).

Okay, my bad, you're right I should have started this thread differently.

What do you mean with "AI rectangles enabled"?

So I guess the best way is to disable SMD and use IVS only?

In NVRs "AI Settings | Smart Plan | Recorder" I have enabled AI Mode (and not AcuPick), because only when that mode is enabled I am able to chose "AI by Camera" in IVS. I guess that is correct?

When You have enabled SMD / IVS and watch footage Dahua apps shows AI rectangles around people / vehicles..
In case of IVS also show rules You draw in IVS configuration..

Did you still didn't switch from SMD to IVS on camera and didn't tried how IVS on camera works?

ps. if you did, show IVS configuration / rules...
