Howto automatic choose VLC for mp4 files and Windows Media Player for the rest?

I use Hikvision and they only give med MP4 videos which can't be played with my standard media player. Every time I need to play a recorded video from my camera, I have to manually look up the file and choose between all my video players (where only vlc can play mp4 from Hikvision).

I remember "old days" where I had to check all or which type video and pic the program should be connected to, but I can't find a solution for it now. Hope for help here.

I assume you are using Windows. If so, right-mouse button on the .mp4 file, select properties. On the General tab, select the Change button, select More apps and see if VLC is in the list, if so select it.

VLC is hard to beat as a media player, IMHO. I set it as the default for whatever video media it supports.

Thanks, concord. The perfect solution! I just done and it works fine, except the standard player has to be set again. Doing that I now has exactly what I am asking for.
