Installing custom codecs/functionality into the DS cameras?

Hi all,

I have a number of the DS-2CD2442FWD-IW cameras which are excellent but are missing some key functionality which is limiting for my needs:

1. AAC isn't supported as an audio encoding codec
2. SMB v2 isn't supported
3. SSH SCP isn't supported (only basic FTP, and that only supports pictures not video)

After speaking with Hikvision, they have stated that they have no plans to add either into the functionality in the near future.

Lets assume that the cameras have SSH enabled, the full version of BusyBox loaded on (to avoid the protected shell (psh) problems etc) and that each have firmware 5.4.5 installed.

Is anyone aware of if its possible to manually install (and enable) additional functionality on these cameras - specifically for me the ability to use AAC or MP3 as the audio codec choice rather than MP2L2/G7xx?

Cheers, Andy

I don't think AAC audio is really a possibility unless Hikvision was to do it themselves.

I bet SSH/SCP (for automatic upload of recordings?) could be accomplished, though not cleanly. Like, you'd probably run a script to check for new recordings appearing on an SD card, and then upload the recordings however you wanted. Newer or older SMB clients, maybe too, but I could not say how well, if at all, it could be integrated with the existing camera features. Simple fact is, though, if you were capable of doing any of this you wouldn't need to ask.

Shame as Hikvision do support AAC on some cameras just not all.

Np, and yes you're right although I was asking for advice in case someone had already looked into it and had the answer; you're right if I were able to figure it out myself I wouldn't ask on a Q&A forum such as this...
