IPC-HDW5442T-ZE - improve night settings for detection

Hello,

I am just playing around with my IPC-HDW5442T-ZE in combination with Frigate and the demo version of Blue Iris to explore the possibilities and to find the best set-up for me.
So far, I get good detection results during day time. Both Frigate and IVS of the camera even detects birds sitting around. But the dog at night on the attached sample video was neither detected by the IVS of the camera nor by Frigate. I was running this motion triggered sample file from through Frigate and it detects motion but no object at all.

Any recommendation how to tweak the settings of camera?
Or do I just need more light?

Current settings for night:
  • main stream (sample file): 2688 x 1520 / FBS 15 / I Frame 15 / H.264 / CBR
  • sub stream (detection): 1280 x 720 / FBS 5 / I Frame 5 / H.264 / CBR
  • AI SSA: off
  • Image - Style: Standard
  • Image - Settings: all +50 (enter)
  • Image - EIS: off
  • Exposure - Anti-flicker: Outdoor
  • Exposure - Mode: Manual
  • Exposure - Shutter: Custom
  • Exposure - Shutter: 0 - 8.3 ms
  • Exposure - Gain: 0 - 50
  • Exposure - Exposure: +50 (center)
  • Exposure - Auto Iris: on
  • Exposure - 3D NR: on
  • Exposure - 3D NR Level: +50 (center)
  • Exposure - 2D NR Level: +50 (center)
  • Backlight: off
  • Backlight: Auto
  • Day/Night - Mode: Auto
  • Illuminator - Mode: Auto
  • Illuminator - Smart IR: General
  • Defog: off
  • LDC: off

Edit: additional settings added

What are your other settings as they all come into play.

For example, many of us find better image and IVS triggering when contrast is 6-8 higher than brightness.

Because of the faster shutter it isn't as noticeable, but having so much building on the right is likely contributing to exposure issues due to IR bounce. I would try to get some of the building out of the frame.

Are you using the Animal filter?

Contrast is important, and more IR/Light always helps

Here's a critter clip and you can see by the SmartPSS sceencap it saw him before the floodlights kicked in

But Mr Rabbit was missed, not enough contrast

It caught these though

I added to the original post.

Thank you.
This I will test.

Thank you.
I anyhow was planning to zoom in a little bit more and tilt it a little bit more down to get the IR of the second cam on top right out of the sight.
(I am waiting for a little bit more warm weather to do this.)

Most of us drop NR down to 40 or below. At 50 it will contribute to blur.

Given the height of that, I would probably take it off smart IR and set the IR manually to what gives you the best image.

The newer S3 firmware includes a check box for animal along with Human and Vehicle.

Are you using MD or IVS?

Most here turn off MD and SMD and use IVS only.

Are you referring to this setting?
I have SMD switched of and set-up IVS on the camera.

Currently I am focusing on Frigate for detection and recording, use the camera detection for comparison only and play around with Blue Iris. Not yet decided in what direction I will finally go.

If you want a quick and dirty solution, simply uncheck all of the effective target filters.
This may cause false positive detection, to avoid that you can make the rule active only when it's dark (by setting predefined time), in the day I guess you will not have a problem with detection with other rule where the effective target is selected.
