IR washed out after swapping lenses

I've got two DS-2CD2042 6mm cameras and I needed a small bump in the zoom in order to read plates. I've tried 8mm, 16mm, and 25mm before deciding that the 8mm would work best.

My problem is that the image is really washed out with the 8mm. Did I get the wrong type of lens or am I not as in focus as I thought? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

second that. is your foam ring still in good shape and pressed up against the inside of the front glass cover?

then again, some lenses are better than others and may not be 'adjusted' for use with IR at night.
IR refracts differently than visible light, so there's a compromise.
Try focusing at night, since daytime is much more forgiving...

also, why not more zoom? that's still a big FOV for plates...

I think the foam is fine, it is a bullet camera and the 8mm sits about the same as the 6mm did. I'll double check though. I'll know tomorrow if I can get plates, they are something that I would like to get and the FOV is a compromise. The cameras are there to catch some neighborhood delinquents and not so much for home security. I always have the option to go back to the 6mm and add another camera for the zoom on that side.

to get plates at night requires configuration (very short exposure times) such that you will see nothing BUT plates and head/tail-lights,
so you probably want a separate camera for an overview to catch those deliquents anyways...

agreed, but i'd rather have perfectly focused night shots, since daytime is more forgiving focus-wise...

OP will probably find he needs more IR out there for night plates, anyways.

i had a 12mm hik bullet converted to 25mm that worked ok for plates at 50-60ft,
but a 6mm converted to anything higher will NOT be an IR canon at that distance...
(the LED's are 'tuned' for the original lens...)

Sorry, I wasn't specific enough. I was just disappointed with how the night shots looked in general, I'm not really concerned about reading plates at night and I know that is more difficult.

I just lost the details in IR mode that were present with the stock lens.

you have a 'before' shot to show us the difference? keep in mind that the same sized lens with a narrower field of view will
always be operating with less gathered light than the wider lens. less light on the same number of pixels leads to less clear
imaging, that's just physics...
