Main Stream vs Main Stream Event

Quick question on this.. Googling kinda didn't get me anywhere.

What's the difference? I am assuming the event setting would be what it records the event to the HDD as when there is an event (such as motion triggering) and the normal main stream is what you would see when looking at the image from say the web browser.

Is this correct? Do you guys often have the event set higher and the other lower? I am having bitrate issues w/ cameras outside during the day where the main stream will not populate in the web browser without dropping it. Curious about these two settings.

Thanks in advance!

I'm no expert at this, so in my mind Main Stream refers to live view. For recording, I have either continuous or event. Event, to me, means motion detection, but I suppose there are other settings that may be referred to as an event. I believe, but not certain, that when using a browser to access you should use sub stream, the higher setting of main stream might be causing your drop outs. Substream would be the little icon with a 1 or 2, located on my screen in the bottom left. 1 is main & 2 is sub. I am referring to browser access cameras directly via IP address, not using an app. I also note that I have different firmware in different cameras and that particular setting is different in different cameras. It's right next to where you select how you view, QT, WebComponent, VLC. On older cameras it is above output on left middle.

When I access my system remotely I use substream to minimize the bandwidth. I have only done this only to test that it works so I may have a different opinion after I actually have some time with remote viewing.

I thought my main stream and main stream event where set the same on all cameras but in just now reviewing, I see that they are not. Tomorrow I'll go through them all again to check.
Most of my settings for Main Stream Event have a higher bitrate than main stream. My settings for Substream are a much lower rate. When viewing Live View on a browser I cannot visually detect the difference between Main Stream and Substream. It may be more detectable in playback.

That is useful when you are recording 24/7, and want to keep the recordings size low, but have the main events with better bitrate.

You can record a camera 24/7 at let's say 512kbps bitrate, and when there is any movement, crank the bitrate up to 4Mbps (or whatever). This way you will still have 24/7 recordings, but when there is nothing happening on camera, the recordings will not take up that much space.

If I am doing motion recording only which setting would pertain to me, Main Stream Event?

Main Stream would only determine what I see on Live View w/ Main Stream instead of Sub Stream if I am not doing 24/7 Recording?

For recording motion the setting that matters you the most is "Event".
Main stream would be when you are watching live the main stream and there is no movement.

what version of BI is that? Screenshot 2021-07-31 052454.png I think your asking about the Record tab, where in my version, (5.4.7.11) I see these options.
