I have tried setting it back to day and that did not stay and setting it back to auto, saved it rebooted and after a minute it turns back to night mode. what in the heck is causing this?
my DS-2DF8C842IXS-AELW is stuck in night mode.

Either the sensor that detects if it is night or day is broke, IR filter is stuck, or the camera has a profile management schedule set that is off what your day/night is.
What camera and what browser are you using? Some cameras are browser dependent, so try a different browser.

the Camera is the model listed in the title and I was using a brave browser to view it but I open the camera GUI inside of chrome. it worked fine yesterday. I wonder how warranty the camera through B&H photo
I keep setting it back to day, it saves it and in a little as a minute it is switches back to night. I have two other hikvision cameras that get stuck in night mode

Getting comfortable
Most of the times i had problems like this with customers living close to the green zones,woods were insect doing nests on sensor. Meaning your camera think its night time all the time.
