Hi, I had a HP Slice which was running well for years but was at its end so about 9 months ago. I replaced it with a brand new MiniPC with 32GB Ram which ever since has been running very poorly even with BI optimization etc.
I'm planning to go for one of the recommended used Lenovo/Dell/HP SFF PC's in this forum and plan to buy this one: Lenovo ThinkCentre M70Q Mini Desktop PC i5-10400T 32GB RAM 1TB SSD Win 11. I just want to prevent making the same mistake as last year. Will this PC be able to run 12 camera's (optimized)? I wanted to get something with a bit higher specs as I also wanted to run HA on Hyper-V on the same PC.

Sadly you may be making the same mistake as a the MiniPC.

The T in the processor means it is designed for low power and will favor lower temperatures over performance. The power supplies and cooling is usually undersized. This computer would be good for casual web browsing, not 24/7 operation.

Stick with Dell Optiplex or HP Elitedesk, though most here prefer the HP Elitedesk.

Our son just posted a refurbished Dell OptiPlex 7050 SFF that should be more than adequate. 64g ram, i5-7500 3.40ghz, 140g SSD (for the OS & apps), 1TB HDD for storage. He has it packaged with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse - for local pickup. Even using pirateship .com I'm not sure what the pc alone would cost to ship.

Thank you, this is really helpful. This probably also explained my old HP slice required a more powerful power supply. Currently the videos I see on my monitor, when there is a lot of movement (windy), are very delayed and I’m sure it’s not the network as it was working better with the HP slice. Will wait for a good deal on a used Elitedesk Pro with a more powerful cpu. Thanks

Thanks for the offer. I’m in Australia so better to wait till they offer one local. There are plenty on sale here

See HERE for choosing which PC to purchase.
Stick with either a Dell Optiplex SFF or HP Elitedesk SFF with at least an i5-8500 or higher cpu.
Avoid any "mini" pc's.
Does BI require the use of the MS version of windows #11? Or, does it work with the far more hardware-efficient, and spyware-free, Linux OS? Also, apart from the forever-bloated MS hardware demands, is a BI user likely to observe the difference between a 7th or 8th generation Intel CPU - when paired with 32g or more ram?

People run 50 cams on a 4th generation with win7 just fine.

Obviously the newer and faster the Intel chip the better, but if you get a great deal on a 7th Gen with win10 it will be fine.

BI is designed for Windows but others have ran it on different platforms, but it is always a crapshoot.

Simply use Media Creation Tool to load up windows with a lot of the bloatware removed and go from there.

Yes, the 8th gen is much more efficient and will use less electricity than a 7th.

dumb question, but im getting back into this for my new house. Are and of the sff computers equipped with dual nic, or is that to be added ?

Moat do not have the 2nd NIC but they are cheap.
about 2-3 years ago i wore everyone out on this site trying to understand how to do a correct secure install. Ill have to relearn it, but hopefully this time i catch on faster...lol. You were tremendous help in the past sir. Thanks for that

Just out of interest, would a HP Elitedesk Mini 65W with a processor that is not temperature reduced (no T at the end) perform similar as its SFF equivalents?

At first glance, the Dell Optiplex and Precision models seem to have similar specs (though the Optiplex seems a little less expensive). Is there good reason to choose one over the other?

I'm seeing some i9 and i7's in newer minis without the T and they are even touting a 95Watt i9-9900, but no space for a gihugic Spinning rust Surveillance drive. you'd have to run an SSD
You should get one, and give us a full report to update the wisdom of the forum.
:)
one day I might try an i9-9900 for a daily driver.

Wow. the i7 9700T chip has 2.0 GHZ base clock speed. that will be problematic for too many cameras when it come to video playback while simultaneously writing to X number of cam streams.
the i7 9700 has a 3.0 GHZ clock speed.
