First time setting this up, sorry if my question or approach is dead wrong!

I have PIA (private internet access) VPN setup on my home router with openvpn config with the NVR configured to access via VPN

On my phone I have both the PIA app and openvpn. OpenVPN has the PIA config file setup.

My first question is, can I use the PIA app to connect to the VPN or do I need to use the openvpn client with configured to PIA to connect? For some reason when I connect via the OpenVPN app my connection is much worse than using the PIA app itself.

In any case (whether connected via PIA or OpenVPN) when I try to connect to the NVR via the DMSS app I get an error that I'm not on wifi and cannot connect. I cannot access the NVR via the IP address in the browser either.

I am sure I'm doing something wrong or missed a step, any help or direction or a guide would be awesome.

Thanks!

I had to look up PIA. Looks like a web browsing VPN. The type that you use to hide your identity when browsing the web.

OpenVPN is not the same. Its a point to point VPN

There;s likely a conflict. Turn OFF PIA and see what you get.

How is DMSS configured for that profile? Did you add the NVR to DMSS via IP, QR code, or serial number?

Is it using the LAN IP as if you are sitting at home? In the NVR on your home LAN network? Are you certain about its IP address?

Thanks! I looked that up and you're right it is NOT point to point, do I need to purchase a different service then? What's recommended for that like nord?

I am not running both clients at once. But whether I connect to PIA or to openvpn via the same config file on the router, I am unable to view via dmss.

Dmss is setup via IP from my home network. I have the NVR as well as individual cams added to DMSS.\

The NVR is 192.168.0.9

The VPN you want is free that YOU host.

Paid VPN is for illegal streaming and porno LOL as they hide your IP. You want to be ON your IP.

OpenVPN is common on many routers or you install it on a computer. Others use Tailscale, Wireguard, or Zerotier.

Two completely different things for two different uses.
So turn off and disable PIA and forget about Nord/PIA or any type of web VPN for now

OpenVPN requires a server component and a client
The server component is typically installed on your router, but it must be activated. There should be some documentation on your router how to do that
Once activated, it will provide some files for you to install on the Client (app) part on your phone/laptop. You need to import the .opvn into the OpenVPN client on your phone

See I told you I was clueless hahaha okay.

So on my router I'm starting over, enabling VPN SERVER (not client) on my TPLINK AXE5400 with the service port matching the NVR 37777 TCP (correct?), generating a certificate and exporting the config file from that. Then installing that on my phone's openvpn and connecting?

Yes

Are you inside your LAN/Home on wifi? If so disconnect from wifi on your phone

Did it take the .opvn file and create the profile on the phone but it just wont connect?

My mistake was not saving the new port config on the router prior to exporting the config so it kept exporting the wrong config file. I've got it working now, thanks so much! That was fairly easy.
