Hello,

I am getting a Dahua NVR5208-8P-EI with 6 x Dahua IPC-HDW3849HP-AS-PV_PRO Tioc Pro cameras installed at a residential property.

It is being professionally installed but I wondered if you could advise on the best way to set it up on my network for best practice and to avoid problems like hacking and 'phone home' etc

I just have Fibre to the Property a standard BT Smart Hub Router.

I've read things about VLANS etc but it's all a bit over my head but I'm quote good at following instructions etc if someone could guide me.

Perhaps I need a better router?

However it is set up the most important thing to me is to be able to receive movement notifications and be able to view my cameras from my iPhone when I am away from home.

I guess the installer will be good at running cables etc but not sure how much technical network side of things they will understand so keen to get an understanding myself.

Many Thanks

ps forgot to mention I only have Mac and iPhone, no PCs here.

pps will I regret this? is there any other system I should be looking at? I really want the active deference side of the TIOCs as if someone is in my garden there is a problem and I want to scare them away as well as record them

Other than the 8MP version vs the 4MP version that would be better at night, nothing wrong with the equipment accomplishing your goals. Though we don’t normally recommend a single model camera all around. Typically each scene/view should be analyzed to determine the best camera model choice for that specific scene. But that takes time and effort.

As far as networking for security, it’s a long answer. There are choices. Each has its own set of complexities for the average consumer.

The #1 thing is to NOT use port forwarding on your router for remote access/viewing.

The easiest and reasonably secure way for remote viewing is to use the built in P2P service on your NVR.

Once you get there and are familiar with how to access your NVR via its built in Web GUI, stop back and we can help you enable P2P

Yes most equipment is made for PC. You will likely have various issues with Mac only but most of them can be worked around.
I don’t personally touch Mac stuff (other than iPhone which will be fine) so I can’t help you there

This equipment is NOT plug and play and forget. You will need to dedicate time to learning how to operate and configure the NVR and each camera.
