Hey all,

I am an IP cam noob but I work on servers within a datacenter noob; so hopefully it should not be too difficult to setup.

My goal for all security measures are primarily to get a would-be robber to burglarize someone else. Ip-cams will just be another deterrent among others.

My layers
  1. Street lighting
  2. Alarm company sign/stickers
  3. IP-cam outside /inside
  4. Honeywell Lyric Controller for local siren
Background info on the house.
  • Street lighting from street lamp directly outside my house
  • Neighbors within an inch next our house on the left and right.

My purposed IP-Cam setup
  • i7 Mini-PC & BlueIris: Record on motion
  • 4 Dome cameras for the outside with SDcard for local
  • VPN enabled router - to access monitoring app?
  • IOS app- need recommendations?
Looking for recommendations onmy setup

Mini Pc's in general don't have the room for the needed drives.
Don't put dome cams outdoors, all sort's of reflection issues, especially as they age.
Asus router with Vpn
App-BlueIris app.
Don't fall for the megapixel game, 2mp is golden.

Face IDing: Don't mount cams higher than 8ft.

This is the cam to beat at the moment: Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

Also Take a look here: Dahua 2MP Starlight Lineup

MiniPC
  • How much storage is needed for record on motion?
  • I was planning to get 128GB sd for each camera.
  • What is most peoples retention policy? (More is better) A month? for vacation?
  • Can i use a external USB drive when i need to go on vacation?
  • I also have access to a optiplex but its a bit bulky and seems overkill
IpCamera
  • Thanks for the tip on Dome and outdoors.
  • Turret- Weather proofing? Anything to worry about?
  • SD-Card for storage- Disaster Recovery Plan incase BI/NVR goes down
  • Where to buy?
Router
  • Own a R7800 Asus so Im good =]

The sweet spot in WD purple HD's is currently at 4tb. Me? That's the least I would get.
Recording on motion only will possibly miss something important. Best to record 24/7, with motion.

Size depends, what if you don't notice something out of place in the yard, and it happened 3 weeks ago, but your recordings only go back 2 weeks. HD space is cheap, store as long as you can. You can set BI to "move" files when you want, so yes you could move to USB drive.

Recommended hardware is an Optiplex SFF or Minitower or HP Elitedesktop Pro with an I5-6500 or an I7-6700. No "T" models.
See E-bay and delloutlet.com for deals.

Turrets rated IP67, nothing to worry about.

Read the threads I listed above and you will see where to buy.

Use this to calculate your outdoor views: Camera Calculator / Design Software Keep PPF >100. You not only want to see what happened, but ID who did it.
