New to LPR - questions

(Firstly I have read some of the content here and various reddit subs).
I am looking to use LPR on a private business parking lot - we have dumping and loitering issues (and a fun new mail fraud one too).
Seems EmpireTech is favored here, and the offerings look good and well priced. I/we have the technical skills to integrate whatever is necessary, with Ubuntu being a preferred platform.
AFAICT there are various cameras (LPR413-Z3 for example) which will do LPR onboard.
For long-term storage and easier access/review I am going to want an NVR I am sure.

It seems that looking at recommended kit, supported browsers for NVR are often very old, presumably because the referenced 'plug-ins' are ActiveX controls?
Am I missing something?

What about the cameras - if I were to rely on access to the individual camera, do they also require ActiveX (or some plug-in only supported in old browsers) - or is it all HTTP/S and rendering in HTML4/5?

Pointers appreciated. Thanks

Working on a PC, most of the newer model cameras (and NVRs) work fine with Edge or Edge in IE mode. Its pretty much all I use.
On some older cameras I may use Pale Moon 32 if need be.

Some may ask you to install websomethingorother.exe. Just say no, move along and ignore it. Its not needed

Thanks. Corp is allergic to everything but latest, patched Chrome - so IE mode will be a no-no. I guess it depends how Edge is interacting when not in IE mode. Appreciate the quick response.

I use Edge in plain Edge mode 95%+ of the time.

The only real noticeable problem I've seen (with newish equipment) is on the NVR itself, you lose a few controls on the Search/Download Timeline screen.
This isnt a problem because you'll quickly find using another program, SmartPSS, is better than the NVR interface for reviewing/downloading clips.
(*This one problem does NOT affect the AI search on the NVR which is great like I show below)

The BI guys should be by soon to talk you into using BI, its a great separate VMS you run on a dedicated windows machine and its inexpensive. If you're all into IT, BI may be for you.

As to the plate reading, do you have gobs of traffic to look through each day?

Most find the dedicated LPR cameras to be expensive and not really needed if you have minimal traffic. I can zip through todays 50 vehicles in short order a number of ways, easiest being visually, then locate the clip and download if you need it. Otherwise I just do it like we did back in the stone age and write it down on a piece of paper. The video is retained for forensics and if you dont have many dozens or hundreds of events per day, its really petty simple.

This is an older NVR, newer models can provide better/more attributes, and depending on your camera placement and a few other things, it may also solve your plate reading with a normal camera but provide that more automated process /white/blacklist that you may want or need.

Basic AI built into the NVR can produce search like these, Vehicle, Human, Face Detection, Non-motor vehicle and more (Even ANPR)

I am one of the BI guys that @bigredfish was talking about, but I won't try and convince you to go BlueIris. If you want automated LPR then the LPR cams and the NVR is the way to go. I don't have a need to store the 350+ plates that come by my house every day, so I use BI and a couple of Dahua (Empiretech) 5241 z12E cams for LPR. They are just two of the 22 cams I have running at my home.

I have found that I can use Edge or Google Chrome with no issues to log into all of my cams. The newer ones work fine on Edge, the older ones work fine on Chrome. That being said, some of the newer PTZ will not show all of the options using Edge according to @wittaj, but I don't have any of those cams.

If you have not seen the following threads, check them out.
