I have five 5231s and each have their own separate IR illuminator with the onboard IR turned off. With that said, I'm able to use Shutter Priority @ 1/120 and 3D Noise Reduction is set to 10. I had been using Auto Exposure before now. I'm looking forward to seeing how this works.

Anyone have a similar setup, what were your results?

yep on my 5442's. Except I am running abut 30-40 DNR but getting crisp images..

1/120 may be a bit dark, but you're thinking the right way, post some pics when you get a chance.

When I said that I forgot I still have to mount the external IR illuminator. Right now my exposure setting is "auto" but I have the built-in IR LEDs off. I'm not impressed with the built-in LEDs on this particular model as they are too focused toward the middle of the scene rather than wide dispersal. The 5442 does a much better job of IR illumination than the 5231 which is probably one reason why you have the IRs off and went with an external IR illuminator.
