No audio from Hikvision IP Camera linked to Hikvision DS-7216HUHI-F2 (2016)

I suspect one of three issues;

a) the Hikvision TurboHD NVR is too old.
b) no old or current Hikvision TurboHD NVR will allow this to work.
c) I have yet to enable the specific setting to allow this to work! :)

I have a Hikvision TurboHD NVR from ~ 2016 with Hik Connect enabled (its the primary method of accessing the NVR off-site). The model# is DS-7216HUHI-F1/16. None of its TVI cameras (a mix of SD and HD) support audio.

I recently replaced a camera with a 4MP DS-2CD2543G0-IS that supports Audio via its Mic input. There was fortunately coax and CAT5 going to each camera location so the switch was easy.

Directly connecting to the camera, enabling Video&Audio and setting the Input to MicIn enables audio either via its Web interface or via Hik-Connect (which I enabled on the camera). This same camera model I have connected to a 32CH DS-7732NI-I4 (2019) and it plays back and records audio with no issue.

I have not been able to get audio to work with this new camera communicating through the TurboHD NVR. Not thru iVMS-4200, not through its web interface, nothing. Video&Audio is selected under Camera Management. Record Audio is enabled in the Storage Management area. Playback of recorded clips lack any audio.

Does anyone seeing this post have any insight on this issue? I'd like to get audio to work on recordings, obviously. There is the budget to replace the recorder but I don't want to pull the trigger on that if no Hikvision TurboHD NVRs will allow an IP camera connected to it capture/passthru its audio from the Mic input.

Thank you for any help.

Have you got the Audio compression set to G.711u ? That appears to be the only standard the DVR supports. It will probably only be accessable via the camera's web set up menu, not via the DVR.

No, it was set to MP3. I must have unconsciously switched it to that given that I'd never added an IP cam with a mic to an older TVI DVR and thus, never ran into the consequence of choosing a higher bitrate friendly codec.

I was able to test all the available codecs present on the camera, the ones in bold worked.
G.722.1
G.711ulaw
G.711alaw
MP2L2
G.726
PCM
MP3
Thank you!
