I'm exploring getting cameras installed. And just about every quote comes with a POE NVR and a 4TB HDD.

Seems like I can save about $500 if I skip that NVR.

However, I like the idea of having the NVR for "just works" and having a BlueIris type setup to dump data into my NAS for archives at some point down the line.

I don't have enough host capacity to standup a machine to run BlueIris at the moment so that would need to be a future problem anyway.

Pretty sure I'd be OK with internal network bandwidth - but are these cameras able to support multiple streams at full stream?
Camera: CMIP3382W-MDA x 8
NVR: LTN8616K-P16

Thoughts?

You didn't ask about the system you are looking at, but those are horrible MP/sensor ratio cameras. 8MP should be on 1/1.2" or larger sensor and these are on 1/2.5" which would make them basically blind at night.

You would be much better off with the cheaper Dahua 5442 series cameras that are cheaper and are on a proper MP/sensor ratio.

Don't chase MP, chase sensor size. The 4MP 5442 series will kick these cameras all night long.

And the Dahua NVR would be a lot less too.

I wouldn't suggest buying an NVR and BI. One or the other. Take the money you were going to spend on the NVR and buy a refurbished business class computer - it will be cheaper and better! Many have got a capable system off ebay for under $200.

Many people do run both simply because they had the NVR first and use it to feed the cameras into BI, but simply skip the NVR and go with the more powerful BI/PC combo.

I run both... started with BI first in 2011, it's still running great on the same old laptop (HP Pavilion m7-1015dx) with 17 cams. I added a Hik NVR several years ago mostly for continuous recording and backup. I use BI for motion detection and LPR duties.

Thanks - I'll have to ask what they offer. The problem is the installers in this area seem to all go with LTS. I'm really, really, not looking to DIY this project, while I have run cable in the past...it's just not something I have the time for at the moment.

That's awesome - esp if it's the same laptop.

Thank you, will do!
