Getting comfortable

This morning, I woke up to one of the PTZ cameras displaying invalid password screen on the monitor. I log into the NVR GUI and try to reconnect it by re-entering the password, no luck, it still showed the same screen. I then click the E icon to log into the camera's GUI. The camera log in screen appears, I enter the regular password and get "Invalid password". Tried again same thing. So, I used the default password for the hell of it, and I get the initialization which prompts me to change the password. I enter my normal password and reconfirm, everything seems ok. When I try to log in, it said it said "invalid password again. I'm like WTF. I added a few characters to the original password and reconfirmed and it logged right in. What in the hell happened?

Upon checking the recording timeline, the camera went offline around 4:07 AM. What is also weird is that half of the position presets were gone, and it defaulted to the preset I used to park the camera on a year ago. I'll have to keep an eye on this camera

That is what it sounds like, then the person reset camera back to factory as a hello someone has entered. Personally would turn off upnp and in router turn it off so it won't forward your ports. Next change all passwords from the one they cracked it's now been sold as your device password. Port forwarding is bad with weak passwords it's really bad.

How do you login without going through the NVR and clicking the IE icon?
Is it on a static IP on your lan?

What brand camera?

I doubt it was a reset of the camera since there were presets that I set from 2020 still in the PTZ function, just not the new presets which were added in the last few months. If a camera reset was done, none of those presets would exist.

Check your firewall logs to see if you had any visitors

You gotta shut port forwarding and upnp off regardless.
And get rid of the default login. Set your own backup login if necessary

Not knowing the make/model it’s hard to say. If you’re still using Lorex cloud I’d dig into that, I don’t know much about it.

Well being connected to NVR sounds like your lorex camera might have memory issue and reverted back to a state from time in history. Question, after your last update to camera did you factory reset it? At times if not it can act like this later date from power spike or fail. Then reloads and pulls in bad data

Much of these suggestions are above my pay grade. How is the typical NVR set up to provide access to a mobile device on a cell service? I presume if a device (laptop, etc.) has access to the same LAN as the NVR, it's just a matter of knowing the IP address to access it. How does a smartphone access the LAN from a distance?

Again if your NVR is setup with UPNP then it could be sitting on the internet. But now knowing it's behind your NVR they would need to gain access to that. Think more a memory issue more then someone gained access.

Mebbe, mebbe not. While possible I suppose, I've never heard of that happening. I would still shut down port forwarding

Maybe a Lorex cloud thing, that's why I asked. I wouldn't take the chance

To answer the OP, commonly, amateurs and installers who dont want to be bothered, or lack the understanding of networking, go into the router configuration and forward certain ports to allow access remotely by any device.. (does not affect access inside your Home/LAN) This allows a path for bad guys to access your LAN and if they can guess or brute force your password, access the device the port forwarding is designated for (your NVR)

The better method is using a communication method built into many NVRs called P2P or even better, a VPN.

Your router model/make and NVR and Camera model/make can/might help us tell you how to correct it.
It would also be helpful to know your phone app name

Have you or do you know how to login to your Router? Is it yours or a provider's box?

In the meantime, you need to read up on basic home networking, port forwarding, and why its not the best idea.

We don't have many choices for internet service here, but the one that we are using provides the equipment with a router built in.

The NVR is connected to the router like my network printers are. The software that is used to access the NVR locally via laptop in the Lorex Cloud app. Lorex Cloud is also used to access the NVR via mobile device. Exactly how the handshake and exchange of information happens between the mobile device and the NVR, I don't know, it's been 5 years since I set up the NVR for mobile access. I believe you have to setup an account with Lorex to provide the connection, but I can't remember

Just to add, the wife just reminded me of a similar incident back in 2022 with the same camera, where it lost presets and was pointing at the ground when we woke up. Don't know if it is related or not

Just did a refresher course on the Lorex Cloud app. I can't be 100% positive, but I believe we are using P2P for connection as it was setup using the device ID. Funny, because the one video I watched, SmartPSS is part of the name of the filename. I presume it's a Lorex branded version of the SmartPSS app, since it is based on a Dahua NVR
