A friend who was a UPS driver told me that when he had concerns about leaving a conspicuous expensive delivery on porch, he would have customer service double-check it with the recipient. Very frequently, they would be assured by the resident: "Oh it's fine to leave it right there. Nothing ever gets stolen in MY neighborhood!" (Famous Last Words.) Yet, he told me that porch package thefts are known to occur even inside upscale gated communities where entry is restricted and they have private security cruising around 24/7.
