So I’m just about ready to purchase equipment. After substantial research here, and elsewhere on the web, I’ve decided to go with Dahua gear and I’ll be installing my system in a couple of phases. I plan to purchase domestically as I’d prefer to deal with a US distributor for ease of support/warranty should I have any issues, and possibly more importantly, I need to get the Phase I install going right away due to a ‘neighbor issue’ referenced in my initial thread in the New Member Intro forum a week ago:

I plan to order through B&H Photo-Video, and I’d welcome any feedback (positive or negative) on that decision, as this would be my first order for Video Surveillance through them. I’ve done a lot of business with B&H in the past (Photo, Video, TV/Home Theater, etc) and I’ve always been VERY Satisfied! Every order has been well packaged, shipped promptly and priced right.

I’ve got a couple of questions regarding Recording Bandwidth I need to answer in order to finalize NVR selection. I plan to install Qty. 4 – 4MP cameras initially, but will add 3 or 4 more cameras (at least 2 will be 4MP) in Phase II of my install. I was initially looking at the Dahua NVR42A08-8P, but after some research I think I might need more bandwidth than the 200 Mbps of that NVR. The NVR52A08-8P-4KS2 is rated for 320 Mbps, but I can’t find any data on ratings for use with 4MP cameras. Everything I’ve found says Max Decoding is 4ch@4K/8ch@1080P. When compared to the ratings for the 16 channel unit (Model# NVR52A16-16P-4KS2), Max Decoding is 4ch@4K/16ch@1080P. So how many 4MP Cameras is that?

The Max Recording Bit Rate for both of those NVR’s is listed as 20Mbps/channel (vs. 8Mbps/ channel for the NVR42A08-8P). Based on the Dahua Camera Specs (Model# IPC-HFW54A1EN-ZI), as well as info I’ve seen posted in multiple forum threads re: 4MP Cameras, and numbers I got using the StarDot Bandwidth Calculator, I believe I’ll need no more than 8-10 Mbps per channel/camera. Sound right? If so, will these NVR’s support 4MP Cameras on every channel? What say you?

As I indicated, my current plans include Qty. 6 – 4MP Cameras in total by the time I’m done, plus one or two more cameras at a lower resolution if that’s all the NVR will support. I might consider a 16 channel NVR if there would be any remaining bandwidth for add’l cameras beyond what I’m planning right now (More is Always Better - See my Signature line), but I don’t really envision ever having more than 10 cameras….Okay, maybe 12. That said, to get there, I might just go down the path of a dedicated PC running Blue Iris once I’ve outgrown the 8 channel NVR.

Looking for some guidance from the forum here - Any info/advice from those of you in the know would be much appreciated! Thanks.

The NVR will have more than enough bandwidth, 6x 4MP Cameras at 10Mbps each = 60Mbps, well short of the 200Mbit celling and barely 33% loaded.. even 16 cameras at that bitrate is still under the celling sitting at 160Mbit
