I totally understand the suspicion, all I can say is they are working for me in multiple places. The only problems have occurred when I didn't do a good enough job of waterproofing.

It's no different than going through a patch panel. Some of my cams go through two patch panels before they get to the IT closet, where they go to another patch panel then to the switch. From there it goes to the outlet at my BI server and then to the NIC.

Just in case you're not familiar with the term "waterproofing" mentioned a couple of times above, I've linked my method at the bottom. Even in areas not directly exposed to the weather such as a crawl space or attic, at the very least I'd use the dielectric grease as mentioned in my method, as prolonged exposure of the metallic contacts to the ambient humidity can produce some oxidation and corrosion. It doesn't take much of it either to cause issues with circuits of so little current.
