I sense an expenditure coming on.....damnit.
Wouldn't that viewpoint from my PTZ be great for a LPR cam, zoomed in to street width down the street (near the lightpost)?
Shit. What cam should I be looking at that won't cause a divorce?
I went digging in the WIKI thinking there was a section for LPR---- I guess you haven't written that yet, LOL--- get to work man! In the meantime, What is the premier forum post for LPR settings that I need to read rather than ask a zillion questions. A forum search turned up too many different posts----
EDIT---
The police were appreciative of the video-- I think they know who it is. There is no Kia dealer in town, and not very many Kia cars...
Thought I would throw together a post on my experiences so far with LPR in an effort to help others that are considering running down that rabbit hole. There are some practical considerations you should know about LPR. I am approaching this from the position of using Blue Iris and Plate...
Introduction This thread is about my journey into LPR (License Plate Recognition) after having about 18 months of experience with IP cams and having quite a bit of my system finished. I am not an expert on LPR, or IP cameras either. But I have spent a lot of time working with my system and...

That's exactly what he was doing. Now @EMPIRETECANDY got some more of my money for a LPR cam--- and I get to learn the ins & outs of setting that bad boy up. Thank GOD for this forum and the amazing members here who painstakingly document their setups on so many cameras in so many different conditions. I hope this new LPR cam helps one of my neighbors catch some thieving a-hole.
Got my Z12 LPR cam today...
I laid it on my front step landing and get this view. Note the zoom level about 1/2 way. I could mount it very close to this view elevation-- or should it go WAY higher up in the soffit? At this elevation, headlights would almost certainly HIT the cam directly as a car comes around the curve of the street. Some of you have mounted at very low spots, and others have not. thoughts?
It's just laying on the landing of my front steps... It COULD get mounted to any of the SPOTS I marked 1 thru 4. #3 would be UNDER the overhang, 4 would be to the soffit out at the corner:
Last spot for consideration is above my PTZ that captured the footage of the car in the OP...
I would probably go #4 myself. Out of the way, protected from the elements, and looks like it wouldn't be affected by lights, etc...
Can always use a step ladder, or something to temporarily place it just to see.
I would also take a pic at #2 at night, just to see how much lights affect it.
With HLC at night, you can knock the headlights right out.
But yes test it at both spots. Coming around that bend you could get some reflections within the lens and glass, so you will want to install at the place that minimizes it.

I figured light shining right at the lens would not be a good situation. I also worry about mounting so low and exposed-- vandalism. Another neighbor of ours reported in our little Fakebook group that someone came up and smashed their Ring doorbell over the weekend. I am strongly leaning towards going right above my PTZ... I COULD also go in the spot where this cam is--- 2.8mm lens on this cheap cam-- but you get a real good sense of the view from above my steps... With that zoom capability-- this should really be good. Note the streetlight shining on the street in the lower right at the corner of my lot that should help illuminate plates too. At the extreme left side, you can see my ptz above that exterior light on the garage.
I would probably opt for the 2nd story. You could get someone block it low with a car or them standing. Up higher you stand a better chance. Mine is on the 2nd story and does just fine.
