Hey all,

Looking to build a cam system in my RV for a rear-view and side-view mirror replacements. It's an older RV, so nothing factory (other than glass mirrors which are TOTALLY insufficient). Thinking of a simple system. using an R-Pi connected to a 10" monitor, leveraging wired PoE IP cams and displaying the rear-view as a landscape image with the two side-views in portrait mode below. No recording necessary (unless it's something that would be included anyway), more for visibility than surveillance.

I have a good idea what hardware I need, but not sure what software to use, that would allow me to display on the monitor in the way that I would like it to.

Any suggestions?

BTW, I have done some searching through the forums for this, and haven't had much luck finding what I'm looking for... If I missed it, I apologize!!

TIA!

Alex

IP cameras are not a good selection for backup cameras, they have too much delay. This is why also currently built-in, OEM systems use analog cameras.

Thanks for the info, Tony! That's something I never even considered.

So, is there a device that will allow an RPi to be the video display with analog cameras? An analog-to-digital conversion box that would allow me to ingest the video and manage it with the RPi?

Perhaps a RPi junkie could chime in as I have no expertise with them.

Otherwise, I'd consider a cheap 4 to 8 channel DVR. For recording video install a surveillance-rated SSD (Solid State Drive) instead of the normally recommended surveillance-rated spinning HDD.

The cams (and usually the DVR) will run on 12VDC. I'd install a regulator for the 12VDC if coming directly from the vehicle's 12VDC source (battery), as many charging systems can peak above 15VDC.
