Hello, I am building a new system for a friend. I've not shopped or compared for years as my original Dahua / Blue Iris system has been running flawlessly. As mentioned in the title, I am seeking seeking a HDW-5231RP-Z modern day equivalent or better as well as HDW4231EMP-AS modern day equivalent or better? Turret only, POE, no LED lights, starlight. This new system will utilize a NVR, max 8 channels. Suggestions for this too if you don't mind.

If you decide on any of these, the current "goto" series, check with Andy at EmpireTech for pricing. If you buy now, he's running a special since he moved to new, expanded, office/warehouse space.

Starlight is a marketing term, so don't get obsessed if the camera doesn't say Starlight...it is the rated spec, but more importantly, looking for reviews here from people that are providing true opinions on the capabilities and in many cases with examples showing a camera performance under worse case scenarios (dark out and someone walking around).

The 5442 series is the current go to camera.

Yup, familiar with "Starlight". It was nice to have that term as you could see at a glance it was a low light camera.

I wish the 8MP was turret form factor!

Starlight, Starlight+, ColorVue, FullColor and a bunch of other "technical" terms are meaningless marketing hype and have no basis in any true technical sense. I've seen 8MP cameras on a 1/3" sensor called "Starlight" and "FullColor" which is patently false.

Thanks, I look at the minimum illumination, and such. In 2017 Dahua cameras labeled Starlight, were low light cameras. Dahua cameras marketed today as Starlight are still low light, however there are 3 levels of "Starlight" (basic Starlight, enhanced Starlight, and Starlight +) not to mention the new "night color". I am only considering Dahua cameras.

Even looking at the lux rating can be misleading. They get that reading with very slow shutter speed in too many cases. The best way to determine the real low light performance is to look at reviews with night videos that contain motion. If the motion is blur free you can assume a shutter speed of 1/60, 16.66ms, or higher. Again, the whole Starlight thing is just marketing hype. Even Dahua lists 4MP cameras on a 1/2.7" sensor as Starlight, or some variation thereof. To get reasonable video at 4MP you need a sensor size of 1/1.8" which is why the 5442 series is the goto camera right now.

Here's a rough guide of sensor versus resolution to stick with -

720P or lower - 1/3" = .333"
2MP - 1/2.8" = .357" (think a .38 caliber bullet)
4MP - 1/1.8" = .555" (bigger than a .50 caliber bullet or ball)
8MP - 1/1.2" = .833" (bigger than a 20mm chain gun round)

^+1 - How it performs is the true measure.

Cameras used to say the shutter speed that the "spec" was developed for, and most of them do not now. So it could have a really low lux rating, but be at a 1/3 shutter.

I can make a cheap camera look like noon when it is midnight slowing down the shutter to 1/3, but then motion is a complete mess.

Just remember, Reolinks say they are Starlight.....

This is an example from Reolink's marketing videos - do you see a person in this picture...yes, there is a person in this picture. This is why you cannot buy a system based on marketing terms like Starlight.... Could this provide anything useful for the police? Would this protect your home? The still picture looks great though except for the person and the blur of the vehicle... Will give you a hint - the person is in between the two columns:

Question, are you guys mounting these IPC-T5442T-ZE cameras with the sd access cover facing up or down? My old cameras did not have the easy access. Seems water would have less chance of infiltration if the access was on the bottom. I know the image easily rotatable in camera software.

The cover on the SD slot is well gasketed and we're not talking about water pressure. I mount them with the SD slot up whether they're under a soffit or out in the open. No problems at all in over a year to a year and a half. YMMV as with everything.

I add a small dab of silicone on top of that reset cover just for the extra peace of mind
