We all know we're being tracked and having our personal information sucked out of us. I got a glimpse of the details after buying a new cordless drill. I'm picking one one company, Ridgid, but I'm pretty sure what they do is typical of many other companies. Before starting the rant I'll state that the cordless drill I bought for $90 on a promotion, with 2 batteries, exceeded my expectations. I did some very heavy work with it that had smoked its predecessor drill, and it was more than up to the job. In my eyes it's an amazing little monster.
Ridgid offers what's essentially a lifetime warranty. All you have to do is register the tool. When trying to do this you're greeted with the requirement to accept their terms and privacy policy (left picture). The picture on the right is who this information is "shared" with. Pretty much anybody!
What information is collected and shared? Just a little bit :
Contact information and other personal identifiers including name; registration ID; home, billing and shipping address; email; phone number and fax number.
Demographic information including gender, age, height, weight, nationality, national origin, race or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, date of birth, citizenship status, marital status, language preference and income.
Online identifiers such as cookie information, IP address, operating system, avatar and social media account information.
Internet activity including browsing history such as the amount of time you spend on our Services and the websites you visitedbefore or after you used our Services; search history; and information regarding your interaction with our Services, websites, applications or advertisements.
Commercial information, including records of personal property, products or services purchased, obtained, or considered, or other purchasing or consuming histories or tendencies.
Geolocation data, such as your actual physical location using various technologies to determine location, including IP address
Inferences drawn from other personal information for profiling purposes, including predispositions, behavior, attitude, abilities and aptitude.
But they don't collect all of that when registering the tool. Where do they get the rest?
So they get enough info from you during the registration, then suck the rest from other data mining outfits, and can turn it over to anybody they want to, for a price, I assume. To add even more insult, they claim the right to change what you've agreed to whatever they want to.
This privacy policy may change from time-to-time. It is our policy to post any changes we make to our privacy policy on this page. You are responsible for ensuring we have an up-to-date active and deliverable email address for you, and for periodically visiting our privacy policy to check for any changes.
I'm taking a pass on the lifetime coverage. It feels too much like selling my soul to the devil.
