Something that I found odd is that the guy kept looking toward the bridge on the right as if he was expecting to see the girl that he was traveling with, but she never showed up.
I have to wonder where the girl went? Also after he comes back into view he is now carrying a black tote bag which I did not see when he first showed up. His girl at the time only had her backpack.

You're right. Originally I thought he was carrying her bag, but looking back at the original recording and taking some snapshots to enlarge, I see that she's wearing a full backpack with two shoulder straps and when he returns alone he's carrying a smaller tote. Good eye!
There's not much in that direction. Average walking speed is roughly 3 Mph or a bit more for younger people, but the woman was not walking anywhere near that speed. The closest civilization in that direction is roughly a mile away and it's rural residential with only a few houses. There's nothing commercial in the area where he could have picked up a tote, or filled a tote that he had folded away in another bag. Not unless he was gathering other people's goods, but he didn't look like a criminal to me.
I think the woman was carrying 2 bags. From the 0:18 to 0:21 second mark you can see the larger full backpack on the left and the smaller tote bag on the right.
I hope I'm wrong, but I think this guy might've took the bag from the woman.
