sub-stream resolution

Hello,

what resolution for the sub-stream of the cameras you are using?
I got "blurring issues" via remote desktop when I used a too small resolution.

Why I am asking? I am new to surveillance and first started testing Frigate. All was fine. As next I started testing Blue Iris to come to a decision on what system I want to settle down. I am running Blue Iris virtualized under Proxmox VE. Basically, all is running fine so far. The view of a single camera is fine via Remote Desktop to the Blue Iris program as well remote via U3 web console. But in the group view with two cameras the picture was getting blurry every 3 to 5 seconds. I tried out all "tricks" I could find: hardware acceleration in Blue Iris, h264 for remote desktop and hardware acceleration for remote desktop. Nothing helped for this issue. The issue was gone when I increased the resolution for the sub-stream.

My settings:
  • main stream: 2688 x 1520
  • sub-stream 1: 640 x 480 <<-- creates issue
  • sub-stream 2: 1280 x 720 <<-- no issue

There is no real answer.

Generally the lower the substream, the less resources that are needed.

Which substream are you sending to BI - substream1 or 2?

I turned substream 2 off on all my cameras as I tend to turn off anything I am not using since the processors in these cams are small and I want it to use as much towards what I need.

But substream ends up coming down to your personal preference. Almost all of mine are D1 resolution at 256 or 512 bitrate - that is enough for me to be able to determine if something is going on that warrants further investigation.

Make sure you have it set to the following:

With substream 1 @ 640x480 I got the bluring issue as described above. With substream 2 @1280x720 the issue is gone.
I had to change the substream as substream 1 does not provide this resolution. Yes, only one substream is active. All other are deactivated.

These are my settings (same on 7 cams) that have worked very well for me for many years. I use the sub stream for motion/AI detection and record the main stream 24/7 - The only thing I change is on a cam I have facing the road with traffic (fast movement), so I set that to main stream CBR fixed bit rate 6144 (6Mb) as fast motion and VBR creates artifacts
