I will try to condense this. We are redoing an industrial complex with 6 adjoined buildings. Currently has access control and cam system, but 20y old. Originally thought I could get away with new analog cams and a DVR, and kick the can down the road but realized all the coax used was CATV, not RG6. If I am pulling new cable, we will do IP/POE cams. Current system is 16 cams, but we need more, and 9 access points under the access control system. With that, let me fire some questions. But before I do, I want to mention that a very good friend is a high end security system pro, and another guy here is an IT guru.

Oh, I also want to make clear that our intent is to build the system and maintain it. We are not looking for 3rd parties to monitor or maint the system. For that reason, we are looking for max level of control when built.

1. On the NVR side, is it possible or reasonable to just build a server to serve as the NVR? Possibly some Linux software solutions to run it? Main reason is so we could technically switch software or control solutions in the future or have more leverage in hardrive backups, expanding system, etc.

2. On the camera side, seems to be a lot of debate on POE injector locations and such. We simply don't have power super close to every camera location but would have 12V because where old cams were, they had to run 2 conductor to power cams. Could we exploit that? if not, what is a reasonable distance for injectors from cam locations?

I think I should back up and explain a few things. there are key features that we need, and trying to figure out how to integrate this. I thought we were headed down the "cloud based" access control until I realized they will bill you monthly for life! I don't even want the cloud, but we certain need the ability to check on the complex remotely. Obviously with a server, we could just do remote access as a possible solution. Either way, we are trying to integrate and simplify this best we can. Because I don't have a current access control solution, I would be very open to that conversation!

here is a short list of much needed control/security points that we need.
1. Badge/card reader device at each existing reader location. Currently have no way to fully control how much access and when, and pin codes will be nice to give temp access, then remove pins as needed.
2. Really good logging of badge and pin access data, even failed accesses. If someone shows up at 2am to try a pin, I want to know about it!
3. Need to find a way to push alerts like this to phone via app, txt, etc. Possibly a cell card could help us?
4. Possibly through network access, we need to be able to remotely open a door. Things happen but pin codes could prob reduce some off this drama.
5. Similar phone alerts for cam system or motion detection. I want to be alerted before a break in so I can prevent it.
6. PA or intercom system that can communicate remotely from phone. This might be tougher but would like to try.
7. Possible other I/O tasks from phone. Whether manually turn on a light, sound a siren, fire missiles, etc.

Basically I am trying to get a total solution. The neighbor just had about 40 homeless found in one of their buildings. We need to step it up. I am trying to figure out how we can integrate all our needs because it seems like vid systems are one thing, access is another, etc, etc.
