Trying to figure out if I should get an SD card...

Is a microSD card necessary, optional or recommended for these cameras even if I'll be connecting them to a PC? I'm planning on picking up a WD Purple drive.

And if so, which of the following memory cards would be better suited for a security camera?

I found all these different types of cards;

SanDisk Ultra
SanDisk Extreme
SanDisk Extreme Pro
SanDisk High Endurance

I'm guessing that maybe the high endurance is what I would want to equip the camera with (if this is even recommended)?

We like redundancy here on the forum. Having video in two places is useful in case the primary system goes out, is updating, or is stolen.

Many here go with Samsung EVO, but SanDisk is fine as well.

Alright, got it. Sounds good. Looks like I'll be picking up some microsd cards next. Amazon has some of these on sale right now for the black Friday deals.

Of course just like with SanDisk, Looks like Samsung makes a few different ones also;

Samsung Evo Select
samsung EVO Plus
Samsung Pro Plus

Gez. Can go crazy trying to figure out which would be better suited for the camera.

It is much easier to install a card before you mount a camera, than after. I have some that don't have SD cards because I am too lazy, and also don't want to try and match the FOV afterwards.

Also, redundancy. I'm not saying an alphabet agency would take my BI PC, but if something happened I have told my brother to collect the SD cards from my cameras.

Yes, I intend to install the card prior to mounting the cameras. :thumb:

If you have both SD card and NVR or PC setup, you need to match the FOV for both recordings?

Looks like Samsung also makes a "Pro Endurance" microsd card. The details show these cards are made for 24/7 recording as noted below.

"To endure recording and re-writes up to 140K hours (over 16 years)" for the 256GB size.

Only problem is they don't make a 512GB. Only goes up to 256GB.

No he meant his camera was already installed and he doesn't want to take it down to put an SD card in and then have to get the field of view right again.

These cameras are not great with SD cards and most will do motion detection and not continuous. Further it will struggle with cards bigger than 256. I forget the reasoning but somewhere in a post is the tech reason why. I have 128 in mine.

For CCTV or dash cam usage You must use only Endurance series cards...
they are designed for 24/7 writing scenarios - have very high TBW (terabytes written) parameter...
normal lines will die after many months of 24/7 data writing...

I use Samsung Endurance PRO (it have highest possible TBW), second is SanDisk Max Endurance, SanDisk High Endurance is third one (much lower TBW)..

Only cards with Endurance in name (Samsung Endurance Pro, SanDisk High/Max Endurance etc)...

In most cams (bullets & turrets) You can install sdcard when cam is installed without changing cam FOV (position/direction)..
the sd card slot cover is easily accessible from the bottom of the camera even when it is installed

You would be surprised at how much footage a 128 or 256 will hold when it records only when triggered. I have 7 weeks of clips for my 4K-X driveway overview cam, which is likely the busiest FOV and has 4K sized files, with only a 128gb card.

Oh, heh, silly me. :)

That's interesting. Maybe I should just stick with the 256GB cards for these cameras then.

It looks like the IPC-Color4K cameras support 256GB however the IPC-T54IR-ZE showed it can take a 512GB card.

Yes, thanks for confirming that info.

I'll pick up a few SAMSUNG PRO Endurance 256GB cards. I wonder if I should just pick this up from either best buys or Samsung direct. It looks like Amazon sells this also but I worry that maybe they'll send me some stock from another seller that may not be an original. :\

I must say, that 4kx cam produces some mighty fine looking images. Very nice quality.

Yeah, I think I'll go with the 256GB cards for all three of the cams I just purchased.

The sd cards will also likely be set to record only when triggered. I think I may leave the (NVR or PC) set to capture 24/7. Is this how most would recommend here?

Yes that is what we recommend. Dahua cams seem to have issues with recording to SD cards 24/7. Some don't have issues, but we have seen many posts here with issues.
