I have a HP elitedesk 800 sff. It’s running a i7-4770. I recently ran an lpr with openalpr running. My computer usage went from 18% to 65%. I know that’s not terrible but I’d like to see what I can do to get it back down. Is there a better cpu that I can just plug and play? I’m not familiar with swapping and upgrading stuff like that. Also before it’s suggested yes I’m running sub streams lol.
Thanks guys!

Unless you have swapped CPUs out off a motherboard before, it will be cheaper, faster, and easier to just spend $100ish and buy an 8th gen off ebay than spend almost that much for just a CPU and then deal with thermal paste and hoping you don't break a pin off, hope the BIOS accepts it, etc.

I have the same computer and tried OpenALPR with a GPU and it pegged the CPU more than not using the GPU (it is a known issue in talking to Rekor), so adding a GPU won't do anything for you.

You could try adjusting masks on Open ALPR so that it maybe isn't being used as much. OpenALPR is a resource hog, so trying to get it to analyze just for car motion will help.

Sorry, when you say $100ish for an 8th gen are you referring to just a processor? I can handle the thermal paste, pins etc. I can sold circuit boards etc. I’m unsure of the other things you mentioned like it being “accepted” by the computer. Seems kind of like an organ transplant haha.

I haven’t seen a full computer with an 8gen for under $500 yet. But I haven’t looked deeply yet honestly.

^+1. the chip can be about the same price as a Elitedesk 800 G4 with an i5-8500. the i7-8700 is also available in that model.

+1 above. Yep can get the whole computer for about the price of the chip and not have to deal with the hassle of replacing the chip.

The problem with replacing the CPU is that to get any real increase in compute power, you need to jump a few, if not several, generations newer. You are on a 4th gen (the 4 in 4770). If you were to go to even the next generation (5th gen), your motherboard will not support that CPU. So now you need a new motherboard.

It is also very possible that you would need a new CPU cooling solution.

But motherboards can be finicky about the RAM. The motherboard manufacturer has a list of tested and approved RAM for their product. I doubt that the RAM in your unit will be on that list. Could still work, but maybe not. Could be a source of intermittent issues down the road that would be hard to troubleshoot.

Then there is the power supply. You current one may not have enough wattage for the new motherboard/CPU combination. But it may work but if you are at the top of the wattage with the new components, this could also be a source of intermittent issues that would be hard to diagnose.

Then there is the problem of getting all of this to fit in your old case. HP does not design their equipment with the notion of upgrading. So it is possible that a new cooling solution will not fit and the power supply slot will only take whatever is in there now.

Performance improvements from gen 4 to gen 7 were pretty small. There was a large performance jump between gen 7 and gen 8. There was another big jump in a later generation, don't remember which one offhand.

I found a screenshot of the Condo system...running the i5-8500 ... this was without Code project AI running. I split the video streams across two drives to get better performance replaying the Ass-clownery from the previous night, each morning.
